Dave, a quick update. The second beta works fine on XPsp3, including the scroll wheel. I'm having good results with my "puck" GPS and Comar AIS receiver, both over USB. I was still unable to get the scroll wheel working on Vista. So I uninstalled completely using uninst.exe from the ProgramFiles folder, reinstalled 1.3.0 from scratch, loaded my chart directories and verified it was working, then reinstalled the second beta over the top. Interestingly, the scroll wheel now works, so something must have been messed up in the old install.

FYI, the second beta does not include some necessary items like the wvsdata folder, so you can't just install the beta without 1.3.0 already installed. It took me a minute to figure out why vector charts wouldn't work when I did that, but the log files pointed me to the missing folders.

ubuntu installed, 3 corrupt CDs (but all bootable), still do not know why, never had that ever before.

needed 2 hours to find openCPN on my HD, the "program manager" of ubuntu only knows what cannonical supplies, well, this is my first linux/ubuntu installation, needs some learning.

but I have the same black picture with a blue outline of land (not even complete) as fulup before. tide stations will show up, but not correctly located, the one in the upper half of the monitor are distributed (correctly?), the ones from the lower half all moved up to the horizontal center line.

My ubuntu knowledge does not allow deeper error tracing and I am in final stage building a 43ft catamaran, meaning to say, time is limited ;-)

Any quick solution for this problem found or I better wait for the next openCPN release? As I understood from a comment above, installing ubuntu for netbooks and then reinstalling 9.04 might help, this the only way?

xtide: I used wxtide for several years without any problem, Asia is included. Is there any way to include these stations in xtide in openCPN, at least for people like me on their own risk?

If you could post the contents of /home/{user}/opencpn.log, we might be able to debug the problem.

Regarding xtide: I'll take a look at the latest xtide data set. We use almost exactly the same tide data source. Should be possible, but I would not look for this in opencpn Version 1.3.2. 1.3.4 at the earliest.

New Windows 1.3.1 Beta is available now.

I implemented Windows chart caching limit, so that memory usage does not grow without bound, and hopefully the page file will not be hit. Currently, the parameter is set so that 4 charts may be in memory at one time. Oldest chart is discarded whenever a new chart is loaded. This should speed up your SENC file creation, especially if you load many charts in one session.

If you like, you can play with the cache limit by hand-editing the config file.
Add a line like the following in the [Settings] section:

[Settings]
nCacheLimit=4 (or whatever)

the CM93 is the same set I use in XP
have Bluetooth GPS, but could not find it in ubuntu yet, though registered properly, missing something like hyperterminal in XP, will try usb hardwired gps too, but I though this should not have any effect on displaying the charts.

Tried to copy the CM93 into the openCPN chart folder but was denied write access as I am not the owner (root), could have asked me for my password, but as said, I am only a few hours in ubuntu. ubuntu, there is far to much information, hard to find the basics, I find millions of solutions to questions not asked ;-)

Thanks so much for attending to our questions on this forum!

Two questions:

- I downloaded both the Mac and the PC version for my husband and my computers. The Mac version installed just fine but when I add a folder with many charts (in subdirectories similar to Dave's log) it doesn't seem to add the sub-charts. Or at least, I get the "world" c-map chart but can't scale down or up and I don't see a lot of activity of adding multiple charts. Am I doing something wrong?

- I used the Mac to download OpenCPN_130_Setup.exe (making sure to select the appropriate non-dmg file) but when I move it to the PC it says it the set-up files are corrupted). I tried re-downloading it on the Mac (long story involving the power of the Mac's aircard and the wimpy-ness of my PC wireless card). I will take the PC to an internet cafe to download the OpenCPN file directly but thought I would mention that here in case there is a larger problem I'm not aware of.

First question:
Have you used the Toolbox->Charts tab to add the subdirectories containing the charts? Perhaps we could see your log file. Not sure where it is on Mac, but it is called opencpn.log

I implemented Windows chart caching limit, so that memory usage does not grow without bound, and hopefully the page file will not be hit. Currently, the parameter is set so that 4 charts may be in memory at one time. Oldest chart is discarded whenever a new chart is loaded. If you like, you can play with the cache limit by hand-editing the config file.

Hello Dave,
ubuntu on hp pavillon dv4000 (widescreen monitor), playing with the twilight and night setting there is good new for openCPN displaying the charts, they are here and seem to work, some faws although (not to be found on the new beta for XP).

Bad is, all is displayed in shades of 95 to 100% black. I only noticed the traces as I installed a new spotlight for my working area that leaves everything else in darkness and the HP is not on my workplace.

Surprisingly this is only seen in the twilight mode, in daylight mode it is either nothing or blue shoreline on black, sometimes covered by a solid grey block, zooming in and out the gray block will become many single gray blocks and vary in size, make me think this might be single chart cells. But I might be totally wrong.

Tried to change the display in ubuntu, this worked for ubuntu, but nor for openCPN.
text appears, in shade of black, own ship marker is bright red rings, zooming in it will become a super tanker ;-))

Tide stations, many appear postioned correctly, still there is a line around the equator where many gather, no idea how that works.

If you want, I can make pictures (or maybe screenshots) for you.

but one addition, it is not only in black, it is just so dark that you can hardly distinguish the colors

hi, xp-machine currently open for some upgrade, this is my very first ubuntu message ;-)
@present only 2 problems in ubuntu, skype w/o audio and opencpn video/display

ubuntu installed some 63MB "securityupdate" today, since then the curser position and ship position and scale indicator are gone, before the showed.

openCPN crashes when hitting the green ENC bar without any log entry,
no action on the yellow bar.
as CM93 is worldwide, the bar remains, the ENC is China Sea, shows up at correct position

Have you tried the solution suggested earlier in this thread?
From a command line in Ubuntu try this:
write "unset LANG" press "enter/return"
write "opencpn" press "enter/return"

Thanks, as I did not have the "Bleu Screen of Error" I thought that might not be my problem, this solution did not work fom me, but when I set the "whole" UBUNTU system to US english the charts popped up, only the text is now missing, whatever I try, brown "markers" are there and when clicked properties, they disply properly what should be written, only, nothing visible.

ther topic:
Same chart set on XPprof is fine, scroll wheel much finer and as suggested before, making use of the sideswitch feature of the wheel would even make it more intuitiv and quicker (up/down - left/right; in/out with the back/forward key or rightKlick+scrollwheel. I am used to this from some graphik software ;-)

Now a picture of mistakes I found in ubuntu & XP version in Japan & Australia, but not on any chart where I have ENC's, the black mark that does not change size when zomming in/out in a particular chart scale, might be gone or change size with another chart scale.
