Beta Build 911

All...

Build 911 of opencpn V 1.3.3 is available at the usual location

opencpnbeta

Changelog:
61. Improve NMEA message handler logic
62. Bypass rendering of WVS charts if scale is less than 5e-5 pix per meter (i.e. small scale, zoomed way out)
63. Implement new ownship icon, toolbox icons
64. Implement new arrow and pencil icons, Windows only
65. Correct Object Query initial scroll position
66. Correct Radar Range rings for skewed RNC's
67. Correct AIS logic for false alerts from targets reporting name before position, (rare, but statistically possible).
68. Implement scrolling Toolbox dialog for smaller screens.
69. Correct Routepoint property export/import.
70. Correct TrackDelete Logic while tracking is active.
71. Implement selectable fonts for AIS target query and Alert dialogs
72. Change (Improve?) Measure tool behavior
73. Correct DeleteAllRoutes logic with Tracking on.
---------Publish Beta 1.3.3 Build 911---------

CVS updated.

Comments:

63. Ship icon will be yellow if GPS data is unavailable, red if GPS is on and OK.

64: Sorry, new cursor art is unavailable on GTK (linux) platforms. wxWidgets only supports black and white cursors on GTK natively. May be possible with some more work. Low priority?

72. Changed Measure tool so that right click drop down menu for dismissal does not obscure the tool text, and stays with the pencil icon. No need to chase the cursor. Comments?

New news:
The Windows build was compiled with embedded debugging info, which should help us find the lingering crashes.
Here is how this works:

We use the MS application DrWatson to capture and format a "Crash Dump". This dump is a small file which contains the state of the system at crash time. The dump file may be sent to me (NOT Microsoft and I can dissect it with the source code and maybe find the problem quickly. Linux users are familiar with the same concept of using gdb on a core dump.

For those Windows users who want to give this a whirl, here goes.

1. First, configure DrWatson....

From Windows, Start->Run->drwtsn32
Set the following options:

Crash Dump Type: Mini
Dump Symbol Table
Dump Thread Contexts
Create Crash Dump File

Note the location of the Crash Dump Files for later. It is something like:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson

Click "OK"

2. The configuration need only be done once. Subsequently, you may start DrWatson with

Start->Run->drwtsn32 -i

DrWatson needs to be started only once per login session, and stays quietly in the background waiting for a crash.

3. Run opencpn as usual. Try to create a crash. If you succeed, you will get the normal MS " Opencpn Blah Blah needs to close...blah blah Send/Don't Send"
Click "Don't Send".
DrWatson wil capture a dump file.

In the folder location recorded in Step 1, you will find a file called "user". This is the dump file.
This is the file I need for diagnosis with source tools. Please email attach this file to me directly.

I hope this effort will pay off in finding those pesky crashes, and we can move to Release of 1.3.4

Thanks all for your diligent testing and useful reports.

Especially I thank manimaul for the Bishop's hat and all the other cool art.
Better and better....

Enjoy....
Dave

Dave

I'm new to opencpn. I just built it on kubuntu from cvs and it calls itself 1.3.3 Build 911. I've mostly been playing with routs and such and have yet to take it to the boat. Thanks for all the effort from you and your team. It looks good and is nice to have something that will run on linux (without wine) for a change.

BTW I've been playing with for about 2 hours and no problems so far. The memory use has stayed around 100k. The only time its hung was when launching the help. Then every thing froze until the web browser was up. Once the browser was up opencpn started responding again.

Thanks again, I can't wait to try it out underway.

Dave,

I downloaded Buid 911 and tried my simulator and opencpn crashes after a few minutes. I'm running Vista which doesn't have Dr. Watson so I went to the Problem report and Soutions and found this information:

Not sure how to get a dump for this but I have downloaded the CVS and will try a build under Visual studio and see if I can recreate the problem to give you more information.

Dave.

Thanks again for a great program, looking forward to testing it today.

Now the 'Bishop's hat' again.. could you please revert back to the old icon until the zoom level is on an 'underway' scale, otherwise the boat icon towers above everything. A red circle with crosshairs in a transparent background would be ideal for the 'Move boat here' function.

Congratulations with the new Query box layout, looks very smart. But it is still impossible to copy any of the contents to the clipboard? Say on a dark night you want to do a quick look up in a ship directory for the ship's name with only it's MMSI number available. Your memory is most probably far better than mine, but many of us have problems memorizing a long row of digits while searching the ship info directories. There are also other situations where you wish to take a quick copy of the ship info to the clipboard. Is it a problem for you to make this text copyable?

Thanks again for all your hard efforts which is pleasing so many.

Testing 911 on XP

  • 71 - New boxes with adjustable fonts for AIS target and alarms, works great! Default font should probably a little larger / bold, for new users. It came up with size 8, to small for old eyes.
  • 63 / 64 - The Bishop and the new pointers: For me, no need to revert to old. But for larger scale charts, I would like to see a smaller bishop. Contrary to Sindbad, for large scale charts, I do like to see a shape of a ship, turned with the NMEA HDG message (or COG if HDx is unavailable). I guess, to satisfy everyone, ships icons for various scales need to be user selectable.
  • 61 - NMEA logic:
With a GPSDogTimeout=3 I am still getting some HDx-timeouts, but less than before.
With GPSDogTimeout=5, I haven't had a timeout in 30 minutes (HDG being sent every 2 sec on my system).
I think the logic has improved, but still can miss some messages. No big deal for me, much better than before when I had to run with a timeout of 10!
  • 67 - I will let you know if this fixes my false alarms with ships showing some 555 knots of speed.
  • drwtsn32: service configured and running, ready to capture...
Thanks Dave and thanks to all contributors!

Ok this seams to crash it every time. I run it under Windows XP Professional sercice pack 3.

1. Start OpenCPN Version 1.3.3 Build 911.
2. Click on Create Route
3. Make a route with 2 or 3 waypoints
4. Right click mouse and left click end route.
5. Right click on blue arrow on the route line and left click Delete all Routes.

6. Click yes on the pop up window.
7. Right click on mouse
8. CRASH

Tiny tiny bug: When right clicking and using "Move boat here", redraw is screw'd up until chart is moved. No big deal. Other than that, all is well here! You could make boat icon removable with an additional button...so it's not in the way when zoomed out for planning...Oh, I almost forgot, my boat icon has a small square in the middle instead of the round dot. Any idea why?

BTW, you've really done a great job here! Thank you all! Chris

Tide icon: too small and should show state of tide

Dave, Manimaul

see attached large screenshot. I circled the two tide locations I was able to find.

I like how Maxsea solves the problem (second image):
  • This icon shows 0.4m above MLLW (text below icon)
  • rising tide (the 3 bars point up)
  • about 30% of total tide above MLLW (yellow bar). One can quickly calculate that full tide is about 1.2m
  • At slack tide, the 3 bars are horizontal. At falling tide, the 3 bars point downward.

Manimaul, can you come up with something similar?

Possible feature request: I love the tide and current graphs! Could OpenCPN place a bright red "dot" on the graph at the current "machine" time to indicate current state? Thanks, Chris

Whoops! I just noticed the vertical line indicator...Sorry, My color blindness doesn't help either...

missing files for make install:

i see the addition to the makefile to make the app launcher in linux:
Code:
cp -p ./$(srcdir)/data/opencpn.png /usr/share/icons
cp -p ./$(srcdir)/data/opencpn.desktop /usr/share/applications
opencpn.png and opencpn.desktop need to exist in the data directory for this or else you get:

Code:
cp: cannot stat `././data/opencpn.png': No such file or directory
i copied the files over manually to for it to install

to fix place these in data dir

phiggins...

Thanks for the VS image.

I need a scroll on the CallStack window. Need to see some opencpn code which calls the offending wxString methods.

Also, in debug mode it will break once on run. This is not a bug. Used for memory leak detection. Simply "continue" to carry on.

Thanks
Dave

units in tides and charts are different - chart outline color

Hello Dave,
am allowed to suggest same units for the tide table (feet, not changeable) and depth (selectable, here meter)?

The chart outline have different colors, most are decent, the magenta of the CM93 is very dominant and close to the red of the raster charts. Maybe just gray for the CM93 chart outline, thinner and less dominat would unclutter the chart. CM93 outline is the least important of all as the charts are selectedd automatically anyway and cover the whole world. I do know there is an off switch.

Thanks & hope nobody will hurt his head.
