My apologies for not replying sooner. In truth I have been pulling my hair out with this problem so much that I have pretty much given up on this, which is sad because I hate giving up on things. Also I'd like this to work for other people so I hope that my perseverance is not in vain.

Unfortunately after installing cmake as instructed I STILL have the same problem. OpenCPN appears to have loaded, it installs something in the menu but it just doesn't run.

What I find strange is that on the download page it says there is a 32 bit version for Ubuntu Linux but a 64 bit version for Ubuntu 10.10. Am I to assume that this does not exist for a 32 bit version of Ubuntu 10.10 yet?

I have tried this on two machines running Ubuntu 10.10 and it does not work on either. I am about to try this on a third 32bit version this afternoon but I don't hold out much hope.

Could someone give me the low-down on what the deal is here, please? Otherwise it looks like I'm going to have to install Windows XP on VirtualBox and just run Maxsea.

Don't give up!
I don't know your problem but would like to find out. I think you are the only one with this problem, as far as I can remember.

The 32 bit version of 2.3 should work on Ubuntu 10.10, but I have my doubts about the 64 bit version working on earlier versions of Ubuntu because of the updated c library.
Please run opencpn through ddd and document the backtrace as earlier described. This was the point of having you compile your own. This is the way to find out what is going on. Please also check if you now have an .opencpn directory in your home directory. Any more ingo in the log file?

demonboy,

try to download Navigatrix from Navigatrix.net • The First Linux Distribution for Cruisers
It is a complete sytem with Ubuntu, OpenCPN and other navigation tools for free.
You may even run it from an USB memory stick.
