OpenCPN 2.5.0 Win 7 problems

I have a brand new Win 7 set up.

Yesterday I installed OpenCPN 2.5.0, then copied over some CMAP and raster charts. Everything worked fine, no problems.

Today, tried to open the program. The icon appeared on the task bar, seemed to be an open program, but nothing appeared on screen, no window opened.

Tried a few times opening and closing the program (from the task bar). Nothing changed, so reinstalled. Still the same.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Re-start the computer and then attempt to open the program.

Re: OpenCPN 2.5.0 Win 7 problems

Windows 7 uses "jump lists". If OpenCPN, or any other program is already open, you have to hover over the task bar icon and the executable will appear above it in a new "bubble". You have to click that new bubble to get the program to come up.

If you minimized it, it goes to the quick launch menu on the task bar on the right side. This is hidden now :/ Look on the right side for an "up arrow" click it and a window with actively running program icons will appear. Click the OpenCPN icon. This is the way it is on my new laptop.

OpenCPN 2.5.0 Win 7 problems

there is no problems. i have opencpn instaled on win xp 32bit, win7 prof. 32bit and win7 ultimate 64 bit, on all three ocpn working for years without any glitch. never ever had one single problem. problem is in users when they do not install it properly or start messing around ocpn. installing ad ons, plug ins, deliting files, folders, etc.

only problem i found can be lack of enough memory. for ocpn you need at least 3gb, otherwise you will get "not responding" when you start zoom in, zoom out or pan around.

Re: OpenCPN 2.5.0 Win 7 problems

I understand how Win 7 works from the task bar, and hovering over the OpenCPN icon does indeed open the "bubble". I click on it and nothing happens. I can open OpenCPN several times and several programs will appear in the bubble. Nothing happens when I click on any of them.

I have used OpenCPN for at least a couple years on laptops and netbooks, but never a desktop like this one, which has Win7 professional 64 bit, 8gb ram and 2tb of disk space. It seems to make no difference if I open OpenCPN alone or with other programs.

I am not alleging OpenCPN is faulty. It is a wonderful program that I recently used to sail home from Southeast Asia. I just can't figure out why it is not working on this computer.

It sounds like the program is running and the window is open off of the screen or minimized.

I don't see how it can be minimized, because it would reappear when I click on the task bar icon I'm guessing.

If the window was open off the screen how would I find it?

It's probably a simple thing, but I can't figure it out.

With the program open, or appears to be open, change your screen resolution with the display settings. If that does not work, change the resolution back to what it was. This might jolt the window out of hiding.

Come to think of it, I had this problem a couple of times on my XP laptop. Closing and restarting always fixed it though.

I have to say, It sounds like the dreaded stuck-minimised problem...(fixed in 2.6betas)
Try this

or this easier:

Try right-clicking on the "bubble", and select "maximize".

Lola,
yes, with O2.5 minimised, if you somehow close O or shut down/crash the computer, it happens every time, in some form, on Windows.

That's why it's good if lots of people can hammer away at the Betas in everyday use before a new release.

If it is stuck minimized or off the screen, you might be able to alt/tab to determine if the program is running.

Re: OpenCPN 2.5.0 Win 7 problems

Seem to have fixed the problem, though not entirely sure how. After trying a number of things suggested here and elsewhere, I was playing with the "show desktop" button. Right-clicking on it and selecting "show desktop" from the very short list did not show desktop, rather the OpenCPN window appeared. Tah-da!

A genius, certainly, but I am not entirely sure it was that or something I had tried previously and not realized that I had OpenCPN back.

Anyway, thanks for the help and thank heavens my navigation netbooks happily hum Ubuntu.
