OpenCPN 5.0.0 - No COG and SOG

Congratulations for the new version 5.0.0 of OpenCPN
I would, however, like to know what I should do so that the COG and SOG values of the lower bar are displayed.
Annex image obtained during my navigation of 16-04-2019.
Thank you

Normally nothing, so we would like to see your data stream. Ideally recorded with the VDR plugin.

Re: OpenCPN 5.0.0 - No COG and SOG

Hi,

I see you use the route-Modus.

Set for a test a filter for the data connection for the outgoing sentences so that you only send RMB.

This helps for me. Don´t ask me why. I wrote here (post 15): http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...am-217099.html something.

Regards

Andreas

Re: OpenCPN 5.0.0 - No COG and SOG

Hi Andreas
Thanks for your answer.
My GPS connection is made in Port Com 14 with one RS232/USB adapter. Some times I use one Garmin GPSII and other times I use one Navman.
To disable the conflicts between The Garmin GPS and the OpenCPN GoTo functions, I put on the OpenCPN Connections Settings Com 14 DataPort Input Filtering: Ignore Sentences: GPMRB; and on the Output Filter Transmit Sentences: RMB and RMC.
This works fine till 4.8.8 versions of Open CPN, but not in the 5.0.0 version.
I have one Network connection with one dongle to receive AIS signals from my VHF radio antenna.
I have also one Network connection to sinagot.net, to know the traffic nearby me if the Internet is present. To avoid the erratic displacement of my own ship, on the Input Filtering of the Network Connections I have the following: Ignore sentences: AIVDO.
I have installed the VDR Plugin to understand what is happen during my next trip and eventually made some refinements to my filters. But I suppose that the information of the COG and SOG present in the status bar of the olds versions of OpenCPN are obtained by calculations based in the GPS positions and now is obtained by the GPS data of the COG and SOG.
Regards
Fernando Lopes

Re: OpenCPN 5.0.0 - No COG and SOG

Hi,

Fernando I had the same configuration for the output side as you. I let OC send RMB and RMC. This works fine under OC 4.8.8 but now with OC 5.0 I got the same SOG/COG problem as you.
I could reproduce the error. Every time when I activate a route (or in the right-click menue: navigate to here) into a couple of seconds -bam- no SOG/COG. Deaktivate the route brings COG/SOG back.

After I investigate the NMEA stream for a while and playing around with aktivated and deaktivated routes I see that OC 5.0 sends sometimes NMEA strings with ALL possible NMEA Informations from my NMEA-Network when a route is aktivated. All the sentences staying normally alone where combined in only one long sentence and this sentence Begins with a RMC-String from OC.
So I changed the outside filter and let OC just send the RMB on the outside connection.

You can look if you get back SOG and COG when deactivate all routes. If you get SOG/COG back then reconfigure your datafilter for the outside connection.

Regards

Andreas

Re: OpenCPN 5.0.0 - No COG and SOG

For some unexpected reason, the VDR file was not sent to you (perhaps it was too long). So, I send it today as a Zip File.
I add also at the same zip file the opencpn.ini and the opencpn.log files.
The OpenCPN COG is send to and is available at the B&G network bus.

Re: OpenCPN 5.0.0 - No COG and SOG

Fernando,

Excellent information, informative and helpful. Can you please attach your opencpn.ini and opencpn.log files?
(add the extension .txt, .doc or .pdf). We will then take off the extension before using it.

See https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do...s_listed_above

Re: OpenCPN 5.0.0 - No COG and SOG

Fernando,

One last question & suggestion. Have you disabled all plugins (I mean all of them that you don't absolutely need) and tried to totally simplify the inputs and installation to see if you can fix the problem? Then add plugins and devices back in one at a time, looking carefully at what happens?

There is another user who has reported something similar.

We need to be able to have at least two users who are able to reproduce this reliably, and then we need documentation, vdr files and screenshots which explain the conditions present when the problem occurs.

Can you please describe your entire system, what devices you have attached and how and where you are sending data?

We appreciate your patience and excellent reports and will be looking at those tryiing to reproduce it as well.

Re: OpenCPN 5.0.0 - No COG and SOG

This one has a space in it and the checksum does not seem to work right.

This one also has a space in it and the checksum is different.

There is your problem, but I the real solution has to do with your configuration I believe.

When testing for checksum take the old checksum off. Also look for spaces below the input area.

Re: OpenCPN 5.0.0 - No COG and SOG

First to convince yourself it is unlikely to be opencpn, download some good data and run vdr_pi and see if the data appears in the statusbar. Try the files in the tactics_pi plugin manual if you don't know of any good VDR files.

Since it was working before, I would ask myself what equipment, connections and software (you have eliminated that by the vdr_pi test above) have changed.

Then check all connections and make sure they are solid, good connections that are dry. Simplify the system to try to isolate the problem. Try using another gps, don't run two gps at the same time. Bypass long connections if possible, etc.
