Re: OpenCPN 5.0 bug reporting

P_Dub is our expert for tides. He knows how to adjust them to what actually happens. He has prepared a newer version which I will try to find.

It might help if these tables were available somewhere publiclly, along with your experience and help.

I don't know if p_dub would make these mods, but perhaps you should Private Message PM him on cruiser forum.

The tides have not been updated for quite sometime, as we've been very busy.

I just checked today's predictions for Whirlpool Rapids vs. the government tables and there continues to be an approximately 3 hour difference. I just PM'd you with more details.

Re: OpenCPN 5.0 bug reporting

The only other solution possible is the average of all, which is already done if you want it.
Regards.

I'm sorry but I don't know what to do with this. I searched for 02536p20200101a on my computer but found nothing. Is there a CPN file somewhere that I need to replace with this?

I'm sorry but if I understand you correctly, averaging anything is not going to work. There are probably fifty places on this coast where accurate current information is vital. At many of the rapids you MUST hit them within 15 minutes of slack to get through them safely with a displacement vessel. And the relationship between the various rapids varies widely. Just look at the area around Stuart Island with Hole in the Wall, the Yucultas, Gillard Pass, Aran Rapids, Dent Island (the Devil's Hole), and Greene Point Rapids to deal with. Many of these rapids run up to 12 knots at peak flood or ebb and are not to be trifled with.

Nakwakto Rapids at full flood:

You have less than ten minutes to get through at slack water.

If you can't give current information in OpenCPN that PRECISELY agrees with the government publications, you (and we) are better off not having it included at all.

Re: OpenCPN 5.0 bug reporting

Scorpius, the OpenCPN Manual covers tides,

Book Mark the website https://opencpn.org/
Now find OpenCPN Manuals then book mark that.
Then do a search on Tides there are lots of links.
One of them at the top is Tides and Currents
This is one of the Sub titles https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do...and_currents&s[]=tide#using_alternative_data_sets

Another page that was started has more detail about the Tide Harmonics file format, started by p_dub and another user.

https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do...tide-current&s[]=tide

What is the speed of the current?!!!

Re: OpenCPN 5.0 bug reporting

Also here is the relevant CF thread for Tides
https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums...83#post2914983

Hopefully you can solve this problem and share the results with everyone by uploading here, actually you should probably shift your comments over to the thread above and make a link to one of the more relevant posts here for reference.

Scorpius
The resultant of the analysis for the Whirlpool Rapids indicate that it append probably 3/4 of an hour latter that the CHS prediction. According to you how latter does it append? I can then change the value for a closer fit.
Regards.

Re: OpenCPN 5.0 bug reporting

Well, it has to fit close to the time of Current Passage , North of Helmcken Island. I see no other issue. What is your idea? Let me know and give me your email so that I can send you the file to add to the HARMONIC and the HARMONIC.IDX to be added.
Regards.

Re: OpenCPN 5.0 bug reporting

The current predictions for Current Passage (and other Johnstone Strait predictions) on OpenCPN have never matched reality. Current in/near Johnstone ARE complicated. CHS does not provide a secondary station for "Current Passage". Where does OpenCPN get this from?

On the other hand, CHS DOES provide a secondary station (based on Seymour Narrows) for Whirlpool Rapids (see image) and this tends to be reasonably accurate (but varies due to fresh water outflows and winds in Johnstone).
