But I have removed and purged opencpn. I cannot find any other installed version.

Ignore, just information messages coming from the various frameworks as sound and GUI are being initialized.

Anyone got any suggestions as to how I might troubleshoot this. I have tried all the things I can think of.

Removing, purging, autoremove, manually removing and directories etc.


There are no issues with the Ubuntu PC. It works perfectly.

On running opencpn for the first time. It fails with an error box containing the following:

Failed to inspect the lock file '/home/sparticle/.opencpn/_OpenCPN_SILock' (error 2: No such file or directory)

At this point before clearing the error dialog by pressing OK. The .opencpn directory seems to exist but only contains a zero byte opencpn.log file.

The error message indicates that "/home/sparticle/.opencpn/" did not exist when starting OpenCPN. This was bug, once. Fixed in april 2020 and certainly a part of OpenCPN 5.2.4.

Apart from that mystery, you indicate that /home/sparticle/.opencpn/ now exists, so what happens when you start O now? If it doesn't exist - just create it.

Do you have the same problem when starting from the command line?

Tell us a bit about your hardware. Has O ever been running properly on that box?

Try running

opencpn -no_opengl

and

opencpn -safe_mode

What happens?

What happens if you start a second instance of O?

I'm using v5.2.4 on a brand new (Dec 2020) Dell XPS 15 9500. I've updated all the drivers to Dell's latest. However, when I enable OpenGL, the world background (no charts installed yet) shows as a series of horizontal lines. Only the floating toolbars display properly. If I disable OpenGL it looks OK (so far).

I've read about why OpenGL is a good idea, but if I can't use it do I have to just turn it off?

The Display Adapter is Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Ti

Try to get the latest driver direct from Nvidia. There is no guarantee that Dell supply the latest/best driver.
Yes you can just turn OpenGL off, if necessary.

I reported the same problem a few times without ameliorations. My video card is up to date and all other program works OK. When I turn off openGL it is OK.

So, I went to the device manager and disabled the Intel UHD driver and rebooted. The screen doesn't look anywhere near as good - I'll see if I can change some settings to make it better - but the OpenGL selection in OpenCPN now works ... I've yet to see if there are any other artifacts, but it's definitely something to do with using the UHD ...

OK - Resolved it.

I downloaded the latest driver from Intel (which I achieved using the Intel DSA application) and OpenGL within OpenCPN now works fine.

For reference the Intel UHD 630 driver I'm using is

Driver version: 27.20.100.9126

They are caused by video adapters and their drivers.

Agreed. But whether they're faults in OpenCPN or not, for me at least, other applications work just fine - OpenCPN is the only application that fails. That's why I reported it here. As I also posted, it was resolved by upgrading the driver (as it happens from an 8-month-old release). I'm not sure what the solution is, even if OpenCPN could run some compatibility checks at startup and throw warnings/errors that would be a help. Or a page dedicated to resolving OpenGL issues.
Anyhow, I'm a big OpenCPN enthusiast and I appreciate how much effort some of you put in. Thank you all.
