Second question: Since we do not have access to a Macbook Air M1 device, and would rather not buy one just to debug this problem, would you be willing/able to test some private versions of OCPN 5.6 to help isolate the effect?

Thanks
Dave

Hello Dave,
sorry but I have been busy for the last days. I can install again the latest version if it is needed. Let me know what to do if I can help...

The macbook air M1 is running with OSX Big Sur 11.5.2

Sudo apt install opencpn. That is all.

I think it is beter to install the flatpak version which is more universal for the Linux versions.

At first you must install the flatpak enviroment: sudo apt install flatpak.

And then the OpenCPN version:

flatpak install --user https://dl.flathub.org/repo/appstrea...CPN.flatpakref

To start from the terminal is: flatpak run org.opencpn.OpenCPN

Thereafter you get an icon to use Opencpn.

Update is: update in place of run in the terminal. And remove to remove the opencpn version.

You can find the information also on the OpenCPN website (flatpak)

It is working here

Flatpak is for 64 bits OS versions, as far as a know !!

Bram,

I am having some similar issues utilizing the ubuntu 20.04.3 apt distro.

Package installed fine, chart downloader worked, but when OpenGL is enabled the map only covers about 1/4 of the screen. If I go in the preferences and disable OpenGl the map fills the screen. I was also was having an issue getting the radar plugin to load. The plugin would install, but OpenCPN would freeze when I clicked preferences, and upon restart it was uninstalled. I gave the flatpack install a shot, and I can now get the radar plugin to load.

I am going to mess with the graphics driver to see if I can sort it.

Specs:
Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS 64-bit
Intel® Core™ i9-8950HK CPU @ 2.90GHz × 12

NV137 / Mesa Intel® UHD Graphics 630 (CFL GT2)
32G memory

Questions:

1. Is there a suggested configuration of hardware/SW-versions that is fairly stable for running a radar?
2. windows, mac, or linux (if so what distro)

Start opencpn using
Code:
GDK_SCALE=1 opencpn
to work this scaling issue around.

Thanks Nohal,
GDK_SCALE=1 did the job.

I did a build from source last night, but now the radar plugin isn't loading. I got it to work using the flatpack build, but from source and the ubuntu PPA no dice..

Thanks for your help.

Re: OpenCPN 5.6.0 Released

New install on new PC and cant get ship to locate GPS and show on chart.

I have bought a Microsoft Surface Pro X, Primarily to run Open CPN and SAS Planet for satelite map overlay of reef areas.
I was just going to get a 2nd hand laptop, but was talked into the Pro X by a Harvey Norman "salesman", on the basis of being able to have a SIM card inserted for more accurate GPS location. Might have been hoodwinked there??

The Tablet is running W11 home, ver 21H2 on a 64 bit ARM processor, (SQ1@3 GHz)
The installation of the latest 5.6.0 all went well
Then paid for and downloaded the oeSENC maps (AU-2021-26) for Aus from the O shop. Took a while to work through that process, but got their with a friends help.
Applied my required setting to the charts viewing options/settings and all was well with viewing, but could not get my location to show. Got the green button to show on the ship icon on bottom Right hand side, but not on the top right, or on the chart. Location was activated in settings asnd this worked Ok to find me in Google maps.
I then tried inserting the cellular sim from phone into the tablet and linked this to my Telstra account. It recognised it OK but I discovered that with the Surface Pro X it can only be used for Data and not calls...And still NO GPS location for ship. Do I need to specify a file path here somehow?
I have the latest refreshed plug in for oeSENC
Any advice on what to try now before I return to HMorman

Is it because I have W11 OS?
Or is it the Tablet with the ARM processor not being compatible or me doing something wrong.
Having spent 3 full frustrating days in attempting the set up I have totally run out of things to try.
Only consellation is that the weather is terrbile for sailing with Ex cyclone Seth about to cross the coast.
Thanks in Advance. Great program, just have to get my 70yo brain tuned to to fully utilise it.

Re: OpenCPN 5.6.0 Released

Sailerboy..
First of all you need to connect to a valid GNSS (GPS/GLONASS/...) receiver. This has nothing to do with charts nor plugins.

I haven't tried the Surface pro myself but other did:

Re: OpenCPN 5.6.0 Released

Hi Hakan and thanks for the reply,
I have been told that the Pro X is unique from the other Surface Pro models in that it does have "wireless Assisted GPS and GLONASS support" This is an extract from their own tech specs. This was the reason I bought this model, so that I had a standalone unit that didnt require an external puck.
I will have to go back to the retailer and seek more information.
I would be keen to hear if anyone else has the Pro X model with OpenCPN installed.

I have a SurfacePro3 which requires a BU353 puck which I connect to a 3-port USB hub, along with a dAISy AIS and a Tiny Seatalk Converter. Since you have an internal GPS you may be able to connect to it directly following MicroSoft Instructions. However it is possible you may need some additional software to gett it working with OpenCPN. Reviewing the OpenCPN manual may help you with this problem

I think the section you should read is

Re: OpenCPN 5.6.0 Released

One can be suspicious when reading: "Assisted GPS and GLONASS support". What is that? No technical specification does mention any GPS/GLONASS sensor/receiver or other inbound circuit. And I can't find a manual how to use it. I get a impression it use a "guessed/possible" position based on the Internet as mentioned in the above links from rgleason.
I retailer contact would be feasible, yes.

Re: OpenCPN 5.6.0 Released

Correct. aGPS means there is no GPS receiver buildin into the device and position data is received only by nearby GSM stations or other internet hotspots. Therefore such devices are useless for navigation at sea.

Re: OpenCPN 5.6.0 Released

Thanks to all for pointing me in the right direction.
Looks like I do need an external GPS sensor.
Would the BU-353-S4 be the most suitable, considering that I only have a type C input to the Surface Pro and would need to use an USB to Type C adaptor to connect?

I don't know this Microsoft stuff. But does your device has no Bluetooth? As long as a computer has Bluetooth any Bluetooth GPS works for any device and any operating system and version. No driver problems any more. Furthermore you don't have any unnecessary cables around and can put your BT-GPS in the best place near a power connection of 12V or 5V for long term use of the BT-GPS.

Re: OpenCPN 5.6.0 Released

A BU353-S4 GPS Puck should work but you will need the USB to USB-c adapter. They are quite small actually. If you are going to try to have AIS an AIS receiver like the dAISy which we use and find quite reliable, then you may want to find a newer 3-port USB/USB-c hub (we have an older version with a useful ethernet connection in the end which could also be used for the radar plugin). I don't know what the best hub configuration would be with the newer fast USB-c Thunderbolt connection, but perhaps you can get a good GPS puck with a direct USB-c connection. You will have to study this. Let us know what you end up figuring out please.

Note: I have blocked Carcode, and do not see his response.

BTW you can make your own thread titled appropriately which in these cases is the best way to post. Simply because this thread regards the 5.6.0 version. Thanks.
