OpenCpn 5.8.0 issues

I upgraded to the latest version of OpenCpn 5.8.0 and have been noticing that it crashes unexpectedly. When I attempt to re-open it i get the option to open in safe mode which I do but then it crashes again. If I choose to open it in normal mode it also crashes. This happens over and over. It also crashes if I zoom in or out somewhat fast by tapping the + and - keyboard keys or the mouse wheel.

As a test, I downgraded to 5.6.2 and works as expected without crashes.

My computer may be getting old? I got windows 10 32 bit Dell latitude laptop.

Anybody experiencing the same issues with the new release?

I don't mind using the previous version but I eventually would like to upgrade to the latest version of OpenCpn.

We also have a win 10 Dell Latitude, it crashes at some zoom levels when using CM93 charts. Crash does not using MBtiles.
No idea why.

Re: OpenCpn 5.8.0 issues

I found a similar problem on Windows 10, which appears to be specific to CM93 charts. Remove those and all works well (with or without OpenGL). Include CM93 then OpenCPN only works if OpenGL is turned off.

On my Raspberry Pi however everything works as it should all the time.

That is not to say that I am not very appreciative of all the hard work that has and continues to go into the development of O.

All...
If anyone could find a reproducible fault, or perhaps a video recording of a fault using cm93 on Windows, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Re: OpenCpn 5.8.0 issues

Perhaps being 32bit is related? The oldest computer you could possible own capable of running Windows 10 is a 64bit computer and should be running 64bit versions.

The 32bit version only existed for compatibility with (at the time Windows 10 was released) very old software that would not run on 64 bit windows. And for perspective, windows XP had a 64 bit version. We are talking REALLY old software that would now require 32 bit.

Windows 32 bit is limited to only using 4GB of RAM, which today isn't really enough memory to run Windows 10. And you probably have an old mix of 32-bit and 64-bit drivers and applications trying to run on a 32 bit host. I would expect your computer to inherently be unstable.

It would be a large undertaking to wipe your computer and start fresh with a 64 bit install. But unless you have a compelling reason to stay with 32 bit, that is what I suggest you do. Along with that make sure you have 8GB installed.

Re: OpenCpn 5.8.0 issues

my 5.8 crashed immediately. what i did find that may have been a problem was that the new edition did not overwrite the older version so there were multiple instances of opencpn in different locations in the program folders.

my solution was to start over with the old. i am sure the people writing the things will sort it out.

cheers

Nope, doesn't quite happen that way. We have had hundreds of downloads and successful installations of OCPN 5.8.0. A few failures, as you report.

None of the developers has experienced similar problems.
Without specific involvement (debugging, testing, experimenting according to directions) of at least one of the users reporting problems with installation, nothing gets magically fixed.

We would appreciate your help.

I'll try to video it later. How can I sent you the video?

Re: OpenCpn 5.8.0 issues

Attached are two log files.

good.opencpn.log is when all works with OpenGL turned off

bad.opencpn.log is with OpenGL turned on, leading to an immediate crash on startup.

(As usual, remove the pdf suffix)
Attached Files
File Type: pdf good.opencpn.log.pdf (381.5 KB, 32 views)
File Type: pdf bad.opencpn.log.pdf (27.8 KB, 39 views)

Re: OpenCpn 5.8.0 issues

Andrew...
Thanks for the logs.
Did OpenCPN crash, or just stop, or become unresponsive?

Thanks

Re: OpenCpn 5.8.0 issues

Andrew...
And if you start without OpenGL, switch to some charts other than cm93, and then restart with OpenGL, does it succeed?

Trying to really isolate the fault to cm93....

Thanks

Re: OpenCpn 5.8.0 issues

Andrew...
That is a very good clue.
Could be related to zoom level, or location (chart contents), or any of a number of other issues.
I may have some test versions to share with you, if agreeable. Again, looking to remotely isolate the exact root cause.

Thanks
Dave
