I've sailed with an AIS transiever together with OCPN last season without experienced any problems like those you anticipates. It's thrue that your boat will appear in the AIS targets list but in the chart it's hidden under your boat's symbol. Also there is no CPA alarms given for your boat. In some way that must be taken care of in the program.

I use to sort the AIS target list by ascending distances. In that way your boat is the first of the list. Then you'll both a have receipt that the AIS is transmitting and a check that you've configured the correct data to The AIS.

Gilletarom....

Regarding AIS ownship:

The current Beta (actually, from 3.1.1309) is corrected to not show the ownship (i.e. AIVDO message) as an AIS target, nor in the target list. AIVDO is processed only in the main navigation thread.

Anyone have an AIS transponder who could check this in the Beta?

Indeed, this is the case, and something that made me very anxious for a week or two when I realised that Own Boat was missing from the AIS targets list, thinking that my transponder had stopped tranmitting. Then I checked again using O 3.0.2 and Own Boat was still in the list and transmitting, and, thus, concluded that the latest version of the software had just changed the contents of the list. The distances, compass direction etc. of the other boats from own boat seem to be OK in the list, also in this version. I have not checked how this will look on the chart in a real course potentially leading to collision.

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.1.1319 Released

Hello All,

Thank you for your answers on the transponder.

Dave:
Other subject. This applies to the display size targets.

To display the user's boat size, OpenCPN must know the length and width of the boat's GPS position on the boat.
To view a full size target, OpenCPN has the length, the width of the target, but unless I'm mistaken, no GPS position of the target on the target.
The target is displayed as the image attached.
But if the GPS target is at the center of the target, then the representation is made by OpenCPN is distorted. It is even worse if, by chance, GPS is toward the front of the target.

Alexandros post shows the need for OpenCPN can be used to determine whether the transponder corectement works or not. Should be a function to test the Transponder.

OpenCPN knows the position of the GPS on the target, at least for class A AIS. See the screen capture:

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.1.1319 Released

Some oddities I have noticed with this release -

1. WHen closing OPENCPN I get a grey screen with the values from the dashboard displayed in horizontal lines.
2. If one disconnects the "puck" gps, the dashboard will freeze and after a few seconds clear all the values except "GPS in View"
3. Using a GARMIN 76 to a real com port, if the Garmin cable is disconnected the dashboard values will continue changing for up to 30 sec! Which makes me wonder if the data stream from the Garmin is buffered and the Ocpn display is behind by 30 sec.??? This doesn't happen with the "puck" GPS.
4. When you reconnect the Garmin, it is not automatically restarted, however, if you go to Tools/Connections/OK, Opencpn will restart the Garmin datastream. I understand that this has something to do with the com driver, but a mention in the documentation on how to restart the garmin after a power loss would be nice.
