Hello Dave,

The new version of the plugin prevents O Tcurrent, Mike, run correctly.

I told Mike. Maybe he'll have you exchanged directly between you two about it.

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.1731 Released

hello Dave,

Here is the result of a test with the NV-Verlag charts.

1° On the one hand, an old problem that I had never spoken. It happened to me several times, distraction on my part, to ask OpenCPN load the NV-Verlag charts without set up and / or activate the NV-Verlag plugin.

OpenCPN trying to do a load. charts appear in the "Charts loaded" in the "Charts / Data" tab of the "Options". Obviously, this does not work. The charts are not displayed.
But in addition, even if it installs or activates the NV-Verlag plugin, it will not be possible to get to see the charts, even forcing the reconstruction of the database. It is imperative to remove the folder and then reload for it to work finally.

Is it possible to prevent OpenCPN attempting to load Nv-Verlag charts as the NV-Verlag plugin is not enabled?

2° I have 3 groups of charts: CM93, S63 and NV-Verlag.

First, using chart group, I display 63 S chart goal I am on Guernsey. So, nothing. Normal. Then I display NV-Verlag, using chart group. And a hole appear on the chart. It is necessary to click on the bar chart to resolve this problem. See screen copy A, B and C.

Second, using aussi chart groups, I display CM93, Then I display NV-Verlag. In this case, the chart is displayed Correctly goal with transparency. It is necessary to click on chart bar for resolve this. See screen copy D.

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.1731 Released

The last version is extremely fast upon zooming (3.3.1731) and becomes almost unmanagable when trying to create a route, it crashes.
The log file does not indicate the crash and would be useless for you to check. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate on a Dell computer laptop.
Anyone else reporting this!
Best Regards

Can you repeat the crashes? What method are you using to zoom? Mouse wheel, arrow keys, toolbar buttons? Did you try with and without "smooth panning/zooming" Also try with and without opengl, and report any differences.

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.1731 Released

Hello Dave,

Last night while doing my tests with the NV-Verlag charts, I met two problems:

1 Once OpenCPN stopped .... No explanation.

2 When I wanted to order my tests, I closed windows directly, without closing O before. And the PC blocked. Unable to closed windows 7. I tried to click "Cancel", unnecessarily. I ended up closing the PC by holding down the On / Off button PC.

Will the rest be cached when the boat moves beyond 650nm from where it is now?
It is possible some charts do not cache. I also noticed some issues myself with the distance sorting reporting, I will try to debug it more. Other wise, so answer your question requires a debugger, but it should in theory cache all the charts regardless of where the boat is.

Another thing to note.. the cache was generated on macos without issue, but loading from it crashed in the lz4 library. If you repeat this crash, is recommended not to use compression caching, at least not on macos (The author of the third party library "lz4" never tried to use it on macos, so there is a bug somewhere in it.)

Why has the accelerator key changed to ALT key?
To match the accelerator key for panning.

Scaling is not synchronized with different zooming modes. No chance to get back the same scaling factor when zooming mode once changed from (+)/(-) to mouse wheel or alt-(+)/(-) back or forward.
You must disable smooth panning/zooming if you actually want this behavior.

8. Chart information window with strange behavior: no chart window with Quilting on, but pops up together with other windows opened, sometimes information chart window does not disapear.
These are known to be buggy on mac, and are also buggy in wx-3.0 on linux.

9. The Mac version from opencpn.org is still using wx 2.9.5. Sean has played with wx 3.0. There are however several bugs fixed for OS X in latest wx 3.1.
You might try with 3.0 and 3.1 and determine if there are any differences, the feedback would be very helpful.

Obviously the Sean optimizations are done for Raspbery Pi and not only useless but sometimes bad for other hardware. There is no difference with different options settings of OpenGL for Mac OS X. The bad behavior still exists with 3.3.1731 from opencpn.org.
These optimizations have nothing to do with raspberry pi or arm processors. The only specific thing on these platforms is etc1 compression for opengles, which is duplicated with the dxt1 compression for regular opengl targets.

On the mac book I tested (the owner sailed away, so no more testing) the performance was very fast, even faster than my chromebook. It may require you to pull the latest git which has changes which were not in the beta, and maybe works best with wx-3.0. If you find a change which is bad on your hardware, then please post the specific commit in git which caused it (easily found using git bisect)

At present, I am at a loss what to answer...
It makes loading from disk and switching between raster charts approximately 20 times faster from before, as well as reducing ram and video memory usage to a minimum. If you have no performance issues (on fast computers the delay in loading a chart may be less than a second) and have plenty of ram to spare, are perfectly happy with the way opencpn runs without this option, then do not enable texture compression caching.

Mouse wheel zooming, not Arrow keys and with or without OpenGL.
After making a few waypoints on a new course the system is over speedy
and crashes generally or even jam unable to close.

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.1731 Released

Compiled and test 3.1731 updated git at today

1) many warnings C4305 ( due to assigning a constant value to a float variable )
The only solution I found was to disable this warning from my project but I am not sure it's the right solution. Is it specific to my system ? should not assigned value followed by "f" ? or preceded by (float) as for example 0.1 is considered as double ?

2) test smooth zooming
work better now . with keys it seems OK
but mouse wheel still not good :
- sometime goes a few step in the contrary sens of the wheel rotation
- zoom factor certainly too big (mainly when zoom out)
- it is better when used with ALT, but very unstable. At moment the zoom do not stop and goes to full zoom when you stop pushing the key after a wheel rotation
- A change of the rotation change should stop zooming, but it's not always the case so it is impossible to get the expected zoom level
in conclusion it's very difficult to be controlled

no smooth zooming seems to work as before

I did the test mainly with CM93, but also with a set of rasters and it seems to have the same behavior

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.1731 Released

Continuing tests ...
ALT key problems
- As already noted, used with numeric panel keys creates a boring sound alarm.
May be I am the only one to face this ?
- another problem :
push one time on the key and mouse wheel zooming do not work as if the focus was lost. I have to click one time anywhere to retrieve

Somehow I never got these warnings, I will try to enable them. In any case, the correct solution is to add an f to the end of the constant.

All I can suggest without debugging on your hardware is to go back to no smooth zooming for the mouse wheel as a special option. Maybe you can poke around in the code where it does the wheel zooming and try to determine the problem. Does anyone else still have issues with latest git and wheel zooming?

I can only think to either have a special option, or in the case of french keyboards, use CONTROL instead of ALT. Any other users have this problem. What is causing the sound alarm?

Is this the same both smooth and not-smooth zooming?

Ok I can use no smooth zooming but my insistence is only for debugging ...

I am not sure it's specific to my hardware because I tested on another one
(My is CQ60-Vista, the second is Asus 10'-W8.1) and I got exactly the same behavior.
I tried to search in the code and with this patch, things became much better on both devices. I do not assert it's the right solution, but that could illustrate what the problem :

It happens in any cases on both devices. The lost of focus too
It happens also in some other cases (a web page for example). but are you sure it's only a keyboard problem or a windows problem ?
in any case, CTRL is OK.

New tests
I tried "texture compression catching" and I got crashes on CQ60-vista ( may be a bit too old ? )
I will try on my other new device W8.1

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.1731 Released

Hello Dave,

Maybe what I'll say he has already been reported.

With OpenGL ON and all options OpenGL On :

- If "smooth Panning / Zooming" is checked, you have to double click on the Zoom In and Zoom out they work for. This is not normal.

- If "Smooth Panning / Zooming" is unchecked, just a simple click to the two buttons work. This is OK

With OpenGL OFF :
Double click is not necessary with "smooth panning/zooming" ON.
