Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2410 Released

Gilletarom,

By "magnetic course" I would understand "COG, in °M".

Heading is not really a type of "course" though it is often translated that way into other languages. (I have seen a Garmin GPS which uses the Portuguese "Rumo" to mean at least four different things - heading, COG, CTS, and bearing of a point...)

Heading means the direction in which the boat is pointing (it needn't be in °M; it could be °C or °T).

Course is ambiguous even in English but it normally means COG, as you say.
It can also mean CTS, course to steer - ie, the bearing to the next route point.
And a few other meanings... But all these should be disambiguated; the plain meaning as you say should always be "COG".

I agree some consistency here would be good. There are also a few other terms which need correcting.

Håkan...

Fixed the issue with Chartbar right-click "Hide...."

Also corrected minor Windows compiler warnings.

In github now. Please test this and comment on both of your recent problems.

Thanks
Dave

And I suspect it was implemented primarily in order to test OpenGL performance.

Dave...
The right click "Hide.." issue in Windows is solved, very good!

The chaotic raster chart issue in Ubuntu still remains, but this was not addressed in any commit, was it?

Thanks

Håkan...

I cannot produce your very interesting raster chart display with OpenGL. Looks like the internal design of a micro-processor. Very cool.

I suspect some trouble with your OpenGL raster cache. Maybe try delete cache?

If still a problem, we will need to step back to some prior commits to verify which commit caused this trouble.

Thanks

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2410 Released

Hi Dave
I get a black screen when going to full zoom with CM93
I attached shots to show what I get and in what circumstances

1) OpenGL activated
- default setting ( neither "Suppress overzoom display ..." nor "Suppress scaled vector ..." are checked ) : shot gl1 - black screen

- "Suppress overzoom display ..." checked and "Suppress scaled vector ..." unchecked : shot gl2 - OK

- "Suppress overzoom display ..." unchecked and "Suppress scaled vector ..." checked : black screen

- both parameters checked shot gl3 - OK

2) OpenGL no activated

- default setting ( neither "Suppress overzoom display ..." nor "Suppress scaled vector ..." are checked ) : shot nogl1 - OK

- "Suppress overzoom display ..." checked and "Suppress scaled vector ..." unchecked : shot nogl2 - OK

- "Suppress overzoom display ..." unchecked and "Suppress scaled vector ..." checked : shot nogl4 - curious

- both parameters checked shot gl3 - OK

So problem with opengl mode
May be also checking the second parameter should check automatically the first one ?

About the zoom problem above.
Sorry I omitted to say it happens only on my 15' Vista device . But It doesn't happens on the same machine with Ubuntu 14.04, neither on my 10' W8.1
Tested with the last git but the same since the official 2410.

Dave..
I use Ubuntu 12.04, Log file says: Renderer String: Mesa DRI Intel(R) 965GM x86/MMX/SSE2
If I switch texture buffer off, all raster charts are fine. If I turn it on and delete the buffer the "cool" processor pattern disappears and the viewed chart is fine. But when new buffer starts to build and the zooming switch to another chart the pattern is there again.

This is the first time I use raster charts in Linux on this machine so I can't say when it was started. On the dual boot Windows session rasters are fine also with texture compression.

So if you not have other ideas I may stuck to unbuffered raster charts in Ubuntu?

Thanks

Dave

I managed to catch an abnormal display of tidal stations.

This state only last for a second or so, when zooming in/out at a fairly small scale. This is repeatable. Standard tidal file + nonfree.tcd loaded.
A bit of a waste of processor cycles.....

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2410 Released

Dave,

Phantom windows seem fixed.
Behaviour is still not perfect but we can play with it more in 4.2...

Iconoships, can you test and see if you have any outstanding major issues?

Some issues I still have:

The GRIB dialog is still hard to use because it does not wx_STAY_ON_TOP, so it disappears behind the main window every time you click the chart.
(It must be brought to front with Cmd-`. Clicking the toolbar button does just closes the hidden window, so it must be clicked twice to actually make the window come back.)
Also the actual GRIB display on the chart disappears after switching apps, until the chart is clicked.

The about window does not hide when switching to another app while it is open.
Not sure why. I guess it is not a child of MyFrame or of cc1?

I still have issues with the OCPNMessageBox, especially on route creation.
For example:
Create a long route leg, great circle dialog pops up. Click yes or no. Chart canvas is not focused, so you now cannot end the route by pressing esc. If you know how, you can press Cmd-` to refocus the chart canvas, then end route. Otherwise you must click, which creates another leg...
The easy fix for this is to use the native message dialogs, by using wxMessageDialog instead of our own custom dialog. Bonus: it looks better!
But you mentioned before that you would rather not implement this until 4.2. Personally I feel that the fix is simple and worthwhile to fix the problems, and that it is a ix rather than a new feature, but I defer to you. I have this implemented so will send a pull request and you can decide what you want to do.

Also, the route leg still rubberbands while the dialog is open, when it should stay still at the point where you clicked.
Easy fix: don't allow chart canvas interactions while a modal dialog is open.
I'll include this trivial fix in the pull request mentioned above, since it affects the same code and is for the same problem area. If you want it by itself let me know...

I should mention that after tonight I may not be online very much for the next few months... as I will be in Argentina, where internet access from the boat is very hard to come by.

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2410 Released

Bugs or features?

I was trying to upload waypoints to my Furuno GP-33 this afternoon and it fails I think due to a simple formatting error. When I use GPS Utility to transfer waypoints I notice that the position is formated without spaces ie. 5040.234 for 50 degrees 40.234 minutes; when O sends it I see 50 40.234 and the GP-33 does not recognise the waypoints (but it does see the message because it reports loading complete). The format for Furuno checkbox is set in connection settings.

I hadn't tried this before and don't if this a feature of the GP-33 or Furuno in general.

Ceasar - may see you around somewhere if you are heading south? Last saw you in Uruguay a few years ago, if your the same Mollymawk

Littlechay....

When I upload with Furuno checked, I see this in the log:

Code:
21:10:10 EST: Opening NMEA Datastream Serial:/dev/ttyS0
21:10:10 EST: -->GPS Port:Serial:/dev/ttyS0 Sentence: $PFEC,GPwpl,3125.326,N,08117.091,W,001000,,,A,,,,
21:10:10 EST: -->GPS Port:Serial:/dev/ttyS0 Sentence: $PFEC,GPwpl,3126.153,N,08113.994,W,002000,,,A,,,,
21:10:10 EST: -->GPS Port:Serial:/dev/ttyS0 Sentence: $GPRTE,1,1,c,01, 001000, 002000*35
21:10:10 EST: -->GPS Port:Serial:/dev/ttyS0 Sentence: $PFEC,GPxfr,CTL,E
21:10:10 EST: Closing NMEA Datastream Serial:/dev/ttyS0
I don't see any errant spaces.
Compare your results?

Thanks
Dave

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2410 Released

I have noticed that I must enable the new option "Suppress scaled vector charts on overzoom" otherwise the framebuffer object (hardware panning) does not work, and I can't really understand why it shouldn't it isn't even overzooming.

Otherwise, text decluttering still doesn't work correctly with hardware panning (never did) and should be fixed possibly (in order I prefer)

1. Make the text rendered in a separate pass so not cached.
2. A more complex scheme to remember which text is decluttered or not possibly prioritizing by type of text
3. Use delayed refresh timer so many frames after the last partial render the whole screen is refreshed
4. Disable hardware panning when text decluttering is enabled

Finally, I must note that when depth soundings are enabled (by pressing 's') the framerate is very low, and I thought we fixed that problem recently, at least for north up.
