Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.814 Released

Linux knows what kind of file it is without an extension, so that does not matter so much. Windows is different. The VDR is happy as long as you give it a text file, irrespective of the file extension.

As for your other problem, your pictures shows two different directories.

One is: /skipper/boat/navigation/vdr
the other is: /home/boat/navigation/vdr

??

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.814 Released

Thomas

Thanks for the answer.

As to the file problem you caught,
Skipper is my home folder. Yes the VDR file is the same one.
Its been like that since first installed and given me grief at times trying to write permissions to files.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Maybe PM to take it away from here.

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.814 Released

Hello Dave,

First, thank you for considering my request for the NMEA sentences CDDSC and CDDSE.

Also, I tested this new tool with the file that Thomas had posted. It seems that the result is Ok

In addition, I sailed three days ago and I had three alarms of this type in the day. Unfortunately, none of NMEA sentences have been recorded in by VDR. In other words, my Navicom VHF RT 550 does not send these NMEA sentences to the PC.

And then, I cannot test completely your new tool. Sorry Dave.

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.814 Released

Hello Dave, Hello Thomas,

In this page Portable OpenCPN | Official OpenCPN Homepage, it is write that the files msvcr.dll and msvcp.dll are needed to install OCPN on a USB stick.

But, in the installation on the PC, these files do not exist. By cons, there are other files. See screen copy.

Where are msvcr and msvcp dll ?
Is it necessary to add the other files on the USB stick ?

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.814 Released

started playing with 3.3.814 and found a bit of an issue.

when I first started it, the radar plugin was enabled (from using 3.2.0). I went to tools/plugins and disabled it, then re-enabled it and got 2 radar icons in the tool bar.

disabling it still left me with one in the toolbar.

curious fellow that I am, I installed 3.2.2. started it up and since the radar plugin was disabled from the 3.3.814 test, no radar icon showed in the toolbar.

i enabled radar, and got 2 radar icons in the toolbar. screen grab attached.

I'm running 64-bit Windows 7 with latest updates.

any thoughts?

Dave!

Gradar managed to crash O, with a bit of a stress test.
Go to the plugins. Keep pressing Enable/Disable without ever pressing "Apply" or "OK" => O crashes after a little while.
Not very realistic, but....
I tried to create more than one Icon, but failed.

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.814 Released

Hi,

I dont know if this problem is only from the most recent Beta.

When I use the Google Earth Plug-in with OpenCpn and then close the program, switch off the Computer etc then try to click on the normal Google Earth shortcut on my desktop or in the Start Menu, the short cuts can't find the googleearth.cxe and I have to manually find it.

I am using Win 7

Done a registry check and it shows: missing kml and kmz files.

Mark...
This has nothing to do with OpenCPN or the plugin - it's a screewed up update of GE - Google changed it's location. Have seen it, but a long time ago.

Where are msvcr and msvcp dll ?you should be able to find these in your Windows system files.(on xp they would be in system 32, I think) A full install of O copies them into your computer if they aren't already there with Microsoft's VC10 package that is bundled with OpenCPN's install package.
yes,you need them on the usb stick, at least, I do, because as a test I uninstalled the Microsoft redist' package..
If you are running the portable version on a host computer of XPSP2 or less, you will need to add a spoof to the host computer's registry to make it think it is SP3..(thanks again, SV_Gilana!)

more here on tricks...

and you can use 7zip on the redist package but there's some renaming required.

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.814 Released

I've had a few crashes out at sea. If if am not mistaken, I only had a choice between sending a crash report if connected to the web (which I was not at the time) or close the program.
I've looked for a crash report when in harbour to send it, but could not find one in the usual places...

Why not offer a third choice: file the crash reports, and send it by email when possible ?

The choice is there already, but not that obvious.
*Click "What does this report contain?" and then "Export".

Thanks Thomas.
I installed this version the day before I left and have had little time to get acquainted with this new feature...

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.814 Released

Folks...

After having processed several hundred Crash Dumps so thoughtfully emailed by Beta testers, I make the following observations:

1. Maybe 20 % of the crashes have real code bugs associated, and can expect to be fixed in the next Beta.

2. Some Windows OpenGL drivers crash without warning or recourse on their first execution in wxWidgets. We have a hard time identifying these faulty drivers, because they crash before telling us anything about themselves. So, if you crash immediately when enabling OpenGL in Options->Display, all we can say just now is "Don't do that". We hope to come up with a better way of isolating the OpenGL drivers for a test run before actually executing them in the OpenCPN process. Sort of a temporary quarantine operation. More Later.....

3. Many of the crashes originate in PlugIns, especially the more complex ones like Weather Routing, etc. If you have crash problems with lots of PlugIns loaded, please unload the ones you are not using to increase system stability.

And, libaisradar_win32_pi18_v092_pi.dll is just plain broken. Please remove this PlugIn if you have it installed, and upgrade to the newest version available online. I never want to see it again

This situation with PlugIn defects is not unique to OpenCPN. Lots of FireFox PlugIns are broken, too. That is part of the price of high-speed, low altitude program development.

4. And, finally, there are the crashes that leave insufficient bread crumbs to really track them down. Most are probably memory allocation bugs, notoriously hard to pin down. That is my especial area of focus now. There is some progress....

Bottom line: If you are using OpenCPN to navigate at sea on a real boat, minimise the use of PlugIns to the set you really need.

Thanks
Dave
