OpenCPN crashes with ENC charts

I downloaded the latest version of OpenCPN 5.8.4 released a couple of days ago and started to crash upon startup. I isolated the problem to ENC charts and CM93 charts.

I deleted all of my RNC raster and ENC vector charts and started with a fresh rebuild. I first installed ENC charts and crashed so I deleted ENC and installed RNC raster charts and it worked as expected.

I then installed CM93 and it crashed again. Upon uninstalling CM93 and keeping RNC charts installed the program worked again as expected.

So, to summarize, OpenCPN is crashing with ENC vector charts only for some reason. Has anyone ran into this problem before? If so, can you recommend a workaround? Thanks

First we need to inspect the OpenCPN logfile, something like:


C:\ProgramData\OpenCPN\opencpn.log

Thanks for the log. Looks generally OK.
Let's try disabling OpenGL, and see it that has any effect.


Stop OpenCPN, and please add the following line to C:\ProgramData\OpenCPN\opencpn.ini:


Under section
[Settings]
DisableOpenGL=1

Thanks for trying Dave. Unfortunately, DisableOpenGL=1 is not taking any effect as it still crashes. Is very strange because the previous version was working just fine. But now that I try to reverse to the previous version, that one is crashing as well.

I did disable all the plugins, re-started and opened just fine showing a Raster chart, however, when I right clicked to select an ENC chart is when it crashed again (see snapshot). I also added DisableOpenGL=1 to my opencpn.ini file.

Should I go ahead and delete all of my ENC charts and download only one and try again?

UPDATE:
Plugins seem to be the problem. I opened and closed OpenCPN with plugins disabled. As soon as I enabled one plugin and tried to zoom in on the ENC it crashed. I opened in safe mode and made sure no plugins were enabled and I now I can zoom in and out on my ENC chart.

What plugins are loaded, and which one plugin reliable provokes the crash?

It happens with any of these plugins. I tried Chart Downloader, Dashboard, OCPN_draw and earthExplorer. These are the plugins that I normally use and ENC charts crashed with any of them.

I can live without them if needed.

I enabled OpenGL again DisableOpenGL=0 and ENC charts still work well with it enabled.

I currently can't use any plugin because as soon as I enabled one (any) and try to zoom in on a ENC chart it crashes. In order to start OpenCPN again I have to alter the ENC charts path and once the program is open I go ahead and disable the plugins, correct the ENC charts path and it works again.

Definitely seeing this on a Windows 7 Home Premium installation (old nav computer) with a fresh install.

If any plugins are enabled (including the chart downloader) this shows up. The raster charts are just fine. Load even a single ENC and the problem will eventually show up as I zoom in on the single ENC chart. Eventually the system goes "Not Responding" and crashes. (The ENC was downloaded using the chart downloader). On next restart it will not come up "Non-Responsive" and crashes unless all plug ins are disabled.

Working with Raster Charts for now and everything working.

This is a fresh installation, even prior to configuring the N2K connection (Actisense NGT-1)

Version is latest download of 5.8.4-0 (June 15 2023 Stable) running on Windows 7 Home Premium, fully patched.
