Opencpn for iPad Air

I have tried repeatedly to download the latest version to my new iPad Air, but keep getting an error message. Is there some trick?

Re: Opencpn for iPad Air

sneuman...
No, there is no trick, OpenCPN does not work on iPad, iPhone or any such Apple devices. It works on Macbook computers running OS X, not on iOS. Once you have it running on a computer, regardless of it's operating system, you can certainly use an iPad as a remote screen/mouse/keyboard to control it, having the right software installed.

Thanks, Pavel. I had no idea. This is a bit disappointing, but it's freeware, so I can't exactly complain. I guess I'll need to use INAVx instead -- at least on the tablet.

You may want to check out SeaIQ - I consider it OCPN on iPad. All the functionality and you can use CM93 charts and it even makes Google Earth charts for you.

I understand that starting Ver 4, SEAiq will not support CM93 charts

Re: Opencpn for iPad Air

Yes, this is unfortunately true. I no longer recommend Seaiq - not because it doesn't support these charts, but because they removed this feature in the guise of an "upgrade", which left everyone stranded.

Removing major features, especially in a way that takes users by surprise after the fact, is not the action of a good software developer or software development.

The old Nobeltec software company went out of business doing the same underhanded thing - it was their Waterloo, and it has taken their new owners quote a long time to reverse the damage.

Re: Opencpn for iPad Air

Has anyone found an alternative iPad/iPhone app that supports CM93?

If you are using Ipad, the best native App I have found was ISailor if you are staying in US waters and Inavix if you are headed off shore. The ISailor application and low cost charts are very precise ( in my experience ) and offers tons of additional functionality. Again, if you are headed out of the US, I navix is certainly the best.

For the time being SeaIQ is the best ipad nav app. I'd stay away from INavX like the plague! they're bait and switch! they advertise that you can download the FREE NOAA charts, but no you can't they force you to get a traverse account and PURCHASE all of the free NOAA charts! and they're all rastor charts that take up a huge amount of space on your ipad!

Oh and don't forget that in order to have access to GPS data on your IPAD you need to either have a cellular enabled ipad or a seperate bluetooth GPS antenna!

I have had iNavX for 10 or so years on my Mac, iPad And iPhone and have NEVER paid for any NOAA charts.

I installed INavX on my ipad this spring and it comes with no charts and forces you to purchase them through traverse an they're all rastor charts which voids the point of using a proper chartplotter app. I went back to SeaIQ

Well, I just downloaded 3 NOAA charts for free to see if they changed their policy, and they haven't. US charts are free. On my Mac I have both vector and raster.
