OpenCPN very remarkable program. Very necessary.

Whether it is planned OpenCPN for Windows Mobile an operating system?

Sorry for my English.

Not sure where else to post this, so apologies in advance if it should be moored elsewhere.

I am taking a back seat from beta testing and help file writing... just discovered my girlfriend is with child and things have become unexpectedly hectic. Although the baby isn't due until July, I am finding it difficult to sit down and work on OpenCPN, the day job and domestic life all at the same time. Since the girlfriend will be peeved if she is sidelined and I need the money from work, OpenCPN has to be the sacrificial time lamb to be slaughtered. I will continue to follow the project but just not as dedicatedly as in the past.

As for my plans for the boat...

SR161, own antenna extremely happy with it. Had it since 2005. Screenshot of AIS targets last time we came the the Gib Straits. Chart was a screenshot of Cmap, then calibrated into Seacler, with Mapcal, (got real fast at doing it)
Just getting into OpenCPN, will take some getting used to the lack of status panel on the right, like all the big systems. I liked that.
I am thrilled with my vector charts coming up with AIS on top and Gribs on top as well!!! Now don't go and tell me about Maxsea, I hate it, I'm here to sail not to learn a million features in a overcomplicated package.
As for accuracy, when I see the land I watch the land more than my screen. Remembering a yacht called Rainbow, that ran up on a reef in Cabo Cruz Cuba in 2001, we went to respond to his Mayday, but were too deep to get close. He said the reef was not where it was shown on the chart. Enough said.
So far,OpenCPN is great, but why that name?

Missing chart labels

I in stalled OpenCPN 1.3.6 and CM93 ver 3 charts and the chart labels do not show up. They do with CM|AP ECS so I know it must be a setting in Open CPN that is the culprit. I have tried differnet settings but have not stumbled on it yet. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Thanks, Bob sv Sisiutl

AFAIK opencpn only works with CM93 ver 2? Are you sure you've got v3?

All settings regarding labels and text are in the tools menu (vector charts).

I have two versions of CM93, one dated 1996 and one dated 2003 (I assumed this was ver 3 since the CD had that written ion it) If there is a location to download a proper ver 2 of CM93 I do not have it. Can you point me there?

Thanks for the help

v3 and labels

I for one would be very interested in discovering a set of V3 charts as I have not heard of them. Some of the charts I do have are dated 2005.
To see the labels you must play with the chart settings under tools, then vector chart settings, eg. choose "Mariners'Standard" and then save, if you now right click on the chart, select the chart detail slider and move it up a notch, I find +1 a good clean setting. Also make sure that all the checkboxes on the left hand Mariners Standard panel are checked.

Will OpenCPN run on one of these little Netbooks with only a 1.6GHz processor? I was looking at an HP Mini that has a GPS module built in. Is that all I'd need to get it running?

I'm using it on a 1.6 ghz atom, runs very well, someone was complaining the other day (on this thread i think) but there have been lots of positive reports as well.

I downloaded these files aqnd they have a file extension of rar and OpenCPN does not seem to recognize it when I add it to the directory for the application. Is there another intermediate step that I need to run first?

Yes. Rar is a type of compression. You need a program to unzip the files. I use a free one called rarfrog or something like that. Just go to downloads.com and search rar to find a suitable utility.

General Feedback

And he is a five star general!
I found a site to download the 2009 CM93 charts.
Index of /kart/CM93 ed2 May 2009
If the link does not work take out the %20 characters.
I then started setting up OpenCPN and was waiting to find out where to set the communications protocols, as usually NMEA is 4800,n,8,1 but my system is 38400,n,8,1 because I am using the SRS161 AIS receiver as a multiplexer. I also have Raymaroon nav equipment picking up seatalk to nmea conversion via the autopilot box, which unusually gives HDM as well as the gps sentences, but the prefix is "II" not like a Garmins "GP" prefix. Preparing for and expecting problems, I connected the RS232 cable, and *POOF* everything worked!! I was amazed that this Software could interrogate the port, set up the protocol and immediately understand all the sentences I was chucking at it!!! Very well done to the developers, I bow in your presence.
