Try clicking the "A" , just to the right of the "wrench", in the upper tool-bar. This button switches text on/off in vector charts.
A lot of info on opencpn.org , and in the help file that comes with the program. Click the big "?" in the toolbar and then "help".

No Ports or Help File

Hi Thomas

Very many thanks for your reply

The A button seems to have very little effect and still no port or place names

Also the help button gives an error "Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (c) isn't associated with any program."

I have tried reinstalling it a couple of times

Make sure that Toolbox -> Vector charts -> Display Category : Mariners Standard is ticked. This is a good start, you can always play around with the rest of the options later.
To get the help-file try to write this address in the browser:
file:///C:/Program Files/OpenCPN/doc/help.html
or just navigate to the file in explorer and open it.

Thanks for the great link -

I am having difficulty loading the charts into Open CPN. All I see is the large scale chart regardless of the directory structure I add into the chart directory. Do I need to specify each individual chart directory or move all of the charts into one directory?

You only specify the upper directory level. If you're using cmap charts, you can't go wrong really, you could try "force database rebuild"

Nice boat btw

If the location labels do not show up on the OpenCPN charts check the settings in the Vector Charts section. You must uncheck the Show Important Text Only and check the Mariners Standard to be 'on' and all the Mariners Standard features to be 'on' as well...

Hello Guys,

Being away for a while and using OpenCPN on my Win7 system which has been working perfect, I now see another version 2. Is this a complete new version from 1.3.6, which I am using? Last winter I tried and downloaded the Beta versions as they came out for testing. Then I downloaded the latest release of 1.3.6 don't remember the build.

So question is: Which is the latest released version and which is the latest Beta version? And where do one download the resp. programs?

I am spreading the word of this excellent program and so far I have not met any who are not impressed with it. OpenCPN Team There are a lot of thankful sailors out on the sea and I am one of them.

Hello Chris, 2.1.0 is the beta version, you can always check the status of the various versions and their download location at the opencpn homepage:

Download OpenCPN | Official OpenCPN Homepage

2.1.0 seems fairly stable as of the most recent revision, although it's clearly marked "not for production (i.e. onboard) use", so you get even less warranty than the usually nil

Thanks for that idpnd! Next thing, I thought I have seen a dowloadable version of the manual but cannot find it. I just recommended a boat neighbour to download and use OpenCPN and he asked me if there was a manual to be downloaded. would be nice to have in the computer on the high seas.

Click on printer-friendly version on the wiki, you can then print or save the entire manual. There's also a brief intro included with the software (question mark symbol)

OpenCPN 2.1.0.total failure.

After a period with only few colapse when zooming to best card, I made a upd reinstalling all cards. The program colapsed and after uninstallation and installation again the program can only show the frame for a short moment at the program colapse again.
The PC use XP.
Is there at known fix for that?
