Re: OpenCPN General

Thx again Rick. Matakana? NZ as well?

I posted another update already, though that has not been saved I see. Continuously switching networks here, either the onboard AIS without internet or the internet connection.

I eliminated the hardware as issue, since I tested with Android and Mac and both work fine with the same configuration. So I removed OpenCPN, also an earlier versions, removed all plugins and reinstalled 5.8.4. Working properly now.

My best guess is therefore that one of the plugins might have been causing issues. I am now adding them one by one, to see if I can reproduce the issue. Though ... I installed quite a lot of them, so that will take some time. If I can reproduce, I will post an update here.

Re: OpenCPN General

Werrner, thanks for explaining what you've done and learned. It helps us all be better at troubleshooting. I would not have thought of uninstalling OpenCPN, but I think you're right to be cautious about checking each plugin as you install them.
(Yes, it is NZ.)

Re: OpenCPN General

I’ve looked at the pictures you provided (Rick, see previous) but I can’t understand what the problem is, perhaps you could try and mark it. A better quality picture might also help.

Re: OpenCPN General

Sorry, I did not see the previous post. Personnally, I think issues like this should be in their own thread! Is the (unseen) meters shown due to the range ring perhaps?
I think the OP should make a new thread and post much better information.

which opencpn? If it's the free one from Maison Automatique ditch it, ancient.

The one from Dave Register is the real one.

Re: OpenCPN General

Regarding the Mason Automatique Android Version:

Could I suggest that everyone on this forum go to the Play Store and write a 1 star review telling people not to download that app. I am constantly getting calls from other yachties asking me why their android OpenCPN does not work and it is always because they downloaded the free version. It would be great if there were enough comments up there that people were warned away and directed to the official version.
Cheers,
Bruce

Re: OpenCPN General

Bruce, I tried finding the free version on Google Play and it did not appear. Where are people finding the flawed and outdated free version which has been such a problem ever since the guy insisted on building it. Why can't it be removed somehow? It is really a dis-service to OpenCPN.

Re: OpenCPN General

Hi Rick,
You can get to it here. Perhaps it didn't show up because you are in NZ? Hmmmm...

You'll see my comment at the top right now. If we can get enough people comment, perhaps a warning comment will always be at the top. I just wrote to the author and asked if he would be willing to remove it.
Cheers,
Bruce

Re: OpenCPN General

Thanks Bruce, I am finding that I have to install the damn thing to be able to comment and it is not compatible with my device. I find most of the comments about this free version are not accurate, indeed some of the commenters are actually using the Dave Register version which is updated regularly and actually works with charts and o-charts, and many of them simply have inaccurate statements.

I think we need to write Google to see if we can get it removed as it is terribly misleading to users and has been a big problem insofar as confusion during support requests etc. I think that if it cannot be removed, it should have a completely different name and should use a different logo,k worst case.

I don't hold much hope about the fellow who compiled it and put it on the google website because he was quite aggressive about it as "open source" although he does not seem to care about updating it and the confusion he has created.

I hope you are successful with this. If I can help in some way let me know. Best Rick
