Re: OpenCPN General

I looked into github and think that is the best way to go. I will repost the issues I found in github and I will stop here.

Re: OpenCPN General

Hi Hubert,
thanks for informing me about this. I am not sure I understand fully the root cause, but maybe it is something I just have to live with, and I guess it is possible with the details setting to find a proper compromize. I am sure it is a complex issue and maybe it has to be that way. I am just reporting what I see :-)

Re: OpenCPN General

I did indeed open a report on github. But now it appears that it has been removed again. I really wonder if I have violated some code of conduct or some such, but if my postings are removed then I think I will stop wasting my time on testing.

Re: OpenCPN General

If you talk about https://github.com/OpenCPN/OpenCPN/issues/1225 you closed it yourself an hour ago...
And if I may beg something, do not mix multiple problems in one issue, it is impossible to handle.

Thanks for that notice. I think the link they refer to in navtex is this one: https://www.gps.gov/governance/advis...-11/powers.pdf

which is an overview from the past, but describing the process.

Actually, the link given is ok, just has to be all lowercase:
https://www.gps.gov/cgsic/meetings/2017/powers.pdf

Re: OpenCPN General

Hi, using OpenCPN 5.0 🙂 down here in New Zealand and have 57 GPS points (formated like S35 10.897S 174 07.145E) I'm trying to import into OpenCPN as a gpx file but they don't plot right (look ok for longitude but latitude off by several nautical miles) (I've taken out the S & E ) even when I put -in front of the 35. When I looked at format of a new waypoint in OpenCPN it is 33° 21.4800' N & 079° 16.9200' W. Can I change the default waypoint fields to S & E which we use down here or am I missing something obvious 😉

Attach the gpx file to a message here but give it the extension .pdf. I will see if I can reproduce the issue.

Hi Little Dave,

I think you are formatting them incorrectly. For your example you should use 35 10.89 S in the latitude box and 174 07.145 E in the longitude box.

If you have moved your boat to your location then when you open the Route and Mark Manager and click on 'New' it will show the page for a new waypoint at your location which will be S & E.

littledave...

GPX format is strictly defining that latitude and longitude are using decimal degrees, so you must convert your values from degrees and decimal minutes you have. The amount of anarchy you would like to introduce is not possible.

Conversion is trivial:
35 10.897S = - (35 + 10.897/60) = -35.18161667
174 07.145E = 174 + 7,145/60 = 174.1190833

Thanks everyone for replies, I did the conversion nohal suggested and it worked. Been about 3 decades since anyone said I was an anarchist so that was a bonus too
