Re: OpenCPN General

Openseamaps is not supported.
Also while it is a great effort, many of us would not use them yet.

But the the charts from openseamaps (.KAT) I couldn't import.
So long I couldn't find a tutorial or a disruption to import these files.
Could someone help or send a link?
Thanks so much

Re: OpenCPN General

There are OpenSeaMap charts in the BSB3 or .kap format - exported raster charts.

Just be aware that those are not nautical charts in general understanding, as they lack for example soundings in the most cases.

From Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromium_OS

Android applications started to become available for the operating system in 2014, and in 2016, access to Android apps in the entire Google Play Store was introduced on supported Chrome OS devices.
Assuming that is correct, at least the Android version of OpenCPN should work.

Re: OpenCPN General

I've got a OpenCPN 4.0.0 from 2014.
Do I need to update the tidal harmonics table?

I assume that you have read this page: https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do...s_and_currents

and are referring to the US data set, as this is the only that I know of that is regularly updated.

I recommend updating, as the updates are based on renewed surveys that include changes to tides and currents due to such things as dredging and silting.
Also.... you can use multiple data sets to see if one is more accurate than the other in your local area.

The tidal files that comes with OpenCPN has not generally had any updates over the years, except for things like time zones, names or other obvious errors.

Re: OpenCPN General

Gentleman, I am making a last request. Could some of you alter the route table distance manager in order to use river current of an Harmonic file to predict ETA using tidal currents at various points along a route? This would certainly be appreciated. I am including a print out from another chart program to show a way that it was done.
Thanks and Best Regards.

Re: OpenCPN General

Dear P_Dub,
Perhaps you missed the announcement of a beta plugin earlier by Mike [Rasbats]
https://github.com/Rasbats/otidalroute_pi/releases

You could search for this announcement in the forum.

otidalroute_pi it is for ov4.8 or less (4.2 I think).
I don't find a description, but I believe it is a beta that accomplishes largely what you want. If you would like to have it compiled for ov50 so you can test and try, please advise, Mike or I can oblige. We will be eager to hear what you think.

Re: OpenCPN General

Rick, it does not take into consideration of the current along the route in a river
usin the harmonic file.
Thanks

Re: OpenCPN General

P_Dub ...

You are correct. oTidalRoute uses Grib files. I have looked at the Nobeltec solution and Harmonics are still something I would like to work with. Lack of time for this at present.

Re: OpenCPN General

Mike, thank you for your kind reply. I have done lot of work on tides around the World and currents as well, including the US and found lots of differences with the actual predictions of various country. So it was a worthed exercise. I have reduce the number of constituents to 92 as it is not necessary to have a bundle of zero (zero time zero, will always lead to zero). Further-more, the file got so big that it became unmanageable. So long.
Best Regards.
NB:- hope you succeed to do it.

Re: OpenCPN General

This is supposed to be a New Post rather than a reply - almost certainly hit the wrong button. Although it will read like a complaint: it ain't. I genuinely have a huge respect and admiration for the development team.

Anyway...In the "Good Old Days" before Brexit, Trump, and no doubt other things, Open CPN at around Version 3.Something was actually bloody marvelous. With CM 93 Ver2 loaded I happily delivered boats around this globe of ours. It got me safely through the very skinny waters of Belize and the Bahamas, it got me through the Australia Barrier Reef, through unheard of Indonesian islands, the Med, the North Sea, etc, etc. Not a glitch, never a crash, it just did everything I wanted it to do.

Version 4.something onwards...oh dear me. Grey areas on charts, Black areas on charts which if you click on them make it all crash, re-arrangement of toolbars and icons which every user knew and liked, and now you can't find what you want, fancy extras which I don't know how to use and don't need anyway.

I liken it to Microsoft: They got it right, eventually (!) with XP. Anything after, up to 10, has either been a total disaster or has become so intrusive that one is a bit leery of the whole shebang.

Maybe I'm a Luddite...but can I go back to Version 3. something please?
