Installing OpenCPN on a RPi

I have successfully installed opencpn on a Mac and I am now trying to get it working on a RPi. When I run the apt-get instruction on the RPi, I get :

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ sudo apt-get install opencpn
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package opencpn is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

E: Package 'opencpn' has no installation candidate

Any advise would be most welcome

Re: OpenCPN General

Did you update your sources? Go to the opencpn web site and you will see how to update. Once you do you will get the message that the download is not recognised, go ahead anyway.

Re: OpenCPN General

Thanks for your responses, when I try and install opencpn I get :
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of opencpn:
opencpn depends on libcurl3 (>= 7.16.2); however:
Package libcurl3 is not installed.
opencpn depends on libwxgtk-webview3.0-0v5 (>= 3.0.2+dfsg); however:
Package libwxgtk-webview3.0-0v5 is not installed.

if I try and do

sudo apt-get install libcurl3

I get the response no installation candidate

Re: OpenCPN General

This is, in fact, a problem of your distribution and not essentially of OpenCPN.

When you work with linux you ought to dive into it.
So ask Mr google about libcurl3 (>= 7.16.2) for your distribution andv why it is not available how's about apt search libcurl ?

One can not expect an setup.exe like on windows.
Installation on linux is - sometimes - complicated but when it works one should not have any issues, like on windows-OS. (mostly hidden CPU usages or RAM problems)

Re: OpenCPN General

In parallel I've tried installing open plotter. The install seems to work, I can do all the config in the other menu. I set to auto start and then reboot - nothing !

I've tried running from the CLI :

openplotter-startup start
and
openplotter-startup check

but it requires a $DISPLAY

I then try from the GUI menu->Run command and both openplotter-startup start & check, appear to start then the dialog silently closes

Re: OpenCPN General

timesnap: sorry to say but your knowledge is not good enough for OpenPlotter.
I am an linux pro and I would stay off OpenPlotter. No detailed documentation available and it would take around 3 weeks to get it working with all features like AIS, SDR and such.

Find an linux pro that will help you with OpenCPN. This neat application is all you need.

At your notebook - of course.

Re: OpenCPN General

Sorry I can not help, but this is exactly the sort of issues why most people stick to Windows.

Yes there are Viruses and the occasional glitch in Windows, but generally it's easy to use and works.

Shame there is not a Windows version of OpenPlotter...

I have over 40 years experience working with every flavour of Unix on the planet. Crappy documentation is crappy documentation, no matter how experienced you are.

I don't mind spending a few weeks getting this working and have opencpn working fine on my Mac. My intention is to install on a standalone RPi so I can use on my boat. Right now though my focus is on the Mac and I am interested in creating some custom plugins.

Re: OpenCPN General

This instruction also me being a native Dos -> Windows user could use.
https://pysselilivet.blogspot.com/20...all-guide.html
After installation OpenCPN works very fine also without any cmd-prompt commands if you like.
Connecting serials and stuff is not directly straight forward but maybe easier than to walk trough Linux basics.

I have it running on an older Fire. I expect they all will, but it isn't on the Amazon store so you will need to sideload it.
