OpenCpn GPS data

Gd to all,

I have this observation about GPS data:

everything works fine but the GPS data seems too sensitive, it means that the speed and the route change continuously. Example my speed is 5.5 Kn and route 200,
only sometimes this appears on the lower string of the navigation data, normally I see the speed from 15 positive to 10 negative to 20 abeam etc. and the route vector leaps everywhere; this defect rise up in the rough sea.
Is there some filter to reduce GPS over data to have a more stable course and data and speed vector??

Tks for your attention.

Re: OpenCpn GPS data

I presume that you are talking about the data in the dashboard panel.
It is possible to set the response rate (filter) by right-click on the dashboard, then preferences, then select "appearance", then change the SOG and COG damping factor.
Mine are both set to 20, which works for me.

But I can't do the same thing when I have a route activated. The speed fluctuates wildly, therefore the TTG fluctuates wildly, as does the ETA and makes the details almost unusable.
It is amazing that our incredibly intelligent and responsive programmers haven't managed to resolve this little flaw yet.

Have you ever tried to use and adjust the value in:
Options=>Connect: [ ] "Filter NMEA course and speed data"

Will this fix the fluctuating VMG, TTG and ETA of the active course dialogue?

Re: OpenCpn GPS data

There is also "Calculate SOG and COG from position changes" under Options->Ships
I have played with both, and they seem to affect different areas of OpenCPN, but I still would always have fluctuating values in the active course window.

I don't know. Please test. I may have a more stable GNSS receiver so don't see fluctuations as you describes it.
