OpenCPN has Stopped Working

We are now using OpenCPN as an always-on alternative to our main chartplotter. Mainly because it does AIS so much better than the chartplotter. That means that we have it running for long periods of time on one or other of our two Windows 8 laptops. The power settings alow the laptop to turn off the display, but not to go to sleep.

Every now and then, when we come back to the laptop to look at our progress, we find a big alert telling us that "OpenCPN has stopped working" and that we should go online to find a solution, or else close the program.

This happens on both laptops (one a Samsung, the other Acer), both with Windows 8, and does not appear to be only if the screen has been turned off.

Any ideas what is happening here?

Re: OpenCPN has stopped working

Is no one else having this problem?

Last night we setup OpenCPN with an anchor watch. We had a Garmin USB as the input. The computer power management allowed the screen display to turn off, but did not allow the CPU to go to sleep.

This morning we wake up and find that, once again, "OpenCPN has Stopped Working" with this crash report (windows 8)

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: opencpn.exe
Application Version: 3.2.0.0
Application Timestamp: 512d5d30
Fault Module Name: wxbase28u_vc_custom.dll
Fault Module Version: 2.8.12.0
Fault Module Timestamp: 4fb7d1e3
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 0004fd2a
OS Version: 6.2.9200.2.0.0.768.101
Locale ID: 4105
Additional Information 1: 5861
Additional Information 2: 5861822e1919d7c014bbb064c64908b2
Additional Information 3: f3d5

How can we trust it for an anchor watch when this happens? And it happens on two different laptops, both running Windows 8 (but I remember that it used to happen on a different machine with Windows7 too).

I am amazed that no one else is reporting this. Is it really just us?

Help!

Re: OpenCPN has stopped working

I think maybe the developers could benefit from some more debugging info...

Some time ago it was explained how to turn on debugging info. I can' t find it, at least not when surfing from my phone.
I can find the troubleshooting stuff on the opencpn.org webpage under the developer tag, but maybe it shoul be a more user friendly description on how to turn on extendef logging also?

Noel...
For general use, upgrade to 3.2.2. If you really want to help us find the cause of this problem (no, I don't remember anybody else reporting it before), install the latest beta, make it crash and send us the report it's integrated crashrpt produces (The e-mail sending is not yet supported, you have to look at the report info and save the file from there, then post here)

Re: OpenCPN has stopped working

Hi Pavel

I am just updating right at this moment.

However, I don't know how to make it crash - it just seems to happen randomly after it has been running for a few hours.

Is the Beta stable enough for general use? Or is there a crash report in the 3.2.2?

thanks

Noel

Re: OpenCPN has stopped working

Noel...
Well... it's a beta. At the other hand I don't remember ever sailing with anything but the latest testing version. 3.3.719 should be pretty safe, but of course make a backup of your routes, wpts, tracks before you start playing with it.
As your crash happens while "doing nothing" (with an anchor alarm on?), you will probably have to do just that and wait...

Good luck

Re: OpenCPN has stopped working

Ok, I installed the beta as a parallel installation. Let's see what happens:-)

BTW, thanks for all your efforts on developing this program, it is by far the best chart plotter I have come across. And especially how it handles the AIS stuff. Awesome.

Re: OpenCPN has stopped working

Ok, I left it on again last night, and it crashed again. Looks like it crashed at midnight exactly.

But how do I pass on the crash report to you? I tried to attach it here, but it tells me that the zip file and the individual files are invalid files for uploading.

Ok, the crash report has been renamed as .xls as that was the only way I could get it uploaded to here as an attachment. Please rename as a .dmp when you view it.

I have pasted the other contents here. But if this doesn't work, let me know where I can send them to you.

Ok now it tells me I cannot paste it into here as it is too long. So I will rename all the files, attach them, and you can then rename them back again

crshrprt.xlm -> crshrprt.xls
opencpn.log -> opencpn.xls
crashreport.dmp -> crashreport.xls
opencpn.log -> opencpn.pdf
opencpn.ini -> opencpn.ini.xls

Hope that works and helps

thanks

Noel

Noel...
Many thanks. It should be enough to rename the whole zip to .doc and attach it here. The forum is a bit overprotective, something like a nanny...

Re: OpenCPN has Stopped Working

LifePart2...

Ditto what Pavel said about renaming and posting the zipped crash dump.

Anyway, I was able to decode the attached separate files, and found a crash at midnight as the current track was being stopped and restarted to create a new daily track segment. I'll try a test overnight in similar conditions, and see what happens. Others may try this as well.

More crash dumps of any sort will be useful, in case this is not the root problem after all.

Thanks
Dave

Re: OpenCPN has Stopped Working

LifePart2...

Ok, there is a real bug in 3.3.719 at midnight, with tracking on, and "Automatic Daily Tracks" is enabled. Crash for sure....

Workaround for now:
in Options->Ships->Ownship, disable "Automatic Daily Tracks" if you expect to be tracking at midnight local time.

Will be fixed for next Beta.
