Opencpn installation under Ubuntu 12.04

Hi Gurus, I am trying to install opencpn under Ubuntu Linux 12.04. I get the following warning.

The package is of bad quality

I have tried downloading the package twice, both with the same result.

Is it safe to install anyway?

Yes it's safe to ignore as long as you have downloaded from Download OpenCPN | Official OpenCPN Homepage, or directly from SourceForge.

It's the Debian lintian check that is a bit "picky". What messages you get actually depends on which tool you use to open the package.

Now I've installed it, It will not start. It just comes up with an accept conditions menu and when accepted, nothing happens.
(Google Earth does this on me too).
Any suggestions

There is a file in your home directory called opencpn.log.
Please publish the file or it's content here.
We may just be able to learn something about your problem ....

Were you upgrading OpenCPN? If so, what version did you have earlier?

Run this command

$killall opencpn

Then, please go to /home/richard/.opencpn/ and create a new directory, called for example "bkp". Move the following files to the new directory:
opencpn.conf
navobj.xml
navobj.xml.[1-5] (5 files, if all exists)


Restart OpenCPN.
Hopefully this is successful!

Whatever the result, please publish "opencpn.conf" and "navobj.xml" from the "bkp" directory. This will help the developers to track down what's wrong.

Thanks Pavel, I tried your suggestion first. This command line gets the program going. I need to download some charts it seems.

I would like to use opencpn on this Dell studio laptop without any hardware changes.

I now tried Thomas's suggestions. I have not had any previous version of opencpn installed, only multiple attempts at installing this version 3.2.2-1.

Terminal says:-

I created the bkp directory and moved two files into it. There were only two in .opencpn those were opencpn.conf and navobj.xml

I tried starting opencpn by clicking the icon, again the warning window and then nothing. The log file shows.

For the record, in case anyone else has this problem. The Ubuntu LaunchPad guru actionparsnip recommended this solution. I had no 3D accelerator driver software running. This fixes both Google-Earth and Opencpn start-up problems for me.
