OPenCPN keeps crashing/freezing

I had an old PC on board and OpenCpn kept crashing and shutting the PC down. I have now upgraded to a new PC running Windows 7 64bit.
I have OpenCPN 3.3.1731
GPS is from a waterproof GPS receiver
AIS is from Comar multi
I have disconnected the NMEA

I have been using CM93 pirated charts but now have unistalled theses and am using OpenSea Map charts

So with no charts at all installed the program runs fine for hours. With the OpenSeaMap charts it still freezes.

I have had one crash where I got a message that the program was not compatible with 64 bit operating system. Is this the case?

I do not get the option to send a crash report. The program simply frezzes and I have to turn it off and then open afresh. Is the crash info stored anywhere

Hi tudorsailor,

I will not respond to all your questions but as you are using O 3.3.1731, y I will suggest you to switch to the latest beta version 0 3.3.1824.

OpenCPN is working fine with CM93 charts.

Re: OPenCPN keeps crashing/freezing

Tudorsailor, you do realise you are using a Beta version rather than the production release?

3.3.1731 was a substantial rewrite of core components and was expected to be unreliable. 3.3.1824 is the next update of that Beta, but do not expect the same stability as the release version.

There are threads (mainly technical) on both those Beta versions.

Re: OPenCPN keeps crashing/freezing

OpenSea map charts generally use a lot of memory, and may cause situations which are not widely tested because they are not widely used. I have 5 opensea map charts, each one is 20MB in size.

These render perfectly in quilted mode with panning/zooming/rotation giving me very smooth 60-70 frames per second all the time once the compressed cache is generated, but your results may vary.

Without opengl, the same openseamap charts give only 5 frames per second panning, and only 3 in course up mode.

I have a new chromebook (6 months old). Something older might be difficult to use with these charts depending on your intended use, but should still operate with an update every few seconds in the worst case.

Please specify if you are using opengl mode, and if so, which opengl options are enabled. If you want to go a step further to help fix the lockup, build latest git from source, and you can break in a debugger to get a backtrace.

Re: OPenCPN keeps crashing/freezing

Sean,

Tudorsailor says that he is using a new PC with W7/64bit.
His question: is this application compatible with a 64bit Win7 - YES

Then we should know if he is using OpenGL and what happens if OpenGL is disabled/enabled.

Re: OPenCPN keeps crashing/freezing

Maybe too much irrelevant information from me. What we don't know is how opencpn handles these particular charts. I suggest uploading the charts which cause problems.

Thanks for the responses. I have been to settings and found that the "Use accelerated graphics OpenGL " is greyed out and is not an option. I did not have "smooth panning/Zooming checked - but will try and see if this alone makes a difference

No doubt someone will ask about the specs of this PC so here they are

Re: OPenCPN keeps crashing/freezing

Tudorsailor,

Sean would like to analyze the charts that are involved in the crash. Can you upload those so he can access them or can you indicate from where he might download those charts?

Re: OPenCPN keeps crashing/freezing

The crashes occur with both CM93 charts and OpenSeaMap charts

If you PM me I can share them via a dropbox folder.

Thanks

Firstly - who is Sean? I cannot PM him as he is not in this thread as far as I can see

I will try using 3.2.2 since this is a non-beta version and should be more stable

The last thing is that I am uninstalling the bluetooth adapter that is/was plugged in to the PC. I am trying to thing of what the old XP and the new W7 PCs have in common. Bluetooth adapter from Belkin is one, the other is Logitech widget linking cordless keyboard and mouse. So starting with removing the Bluetooth and unistalling the drivers

Thanks

Crashing now cured- I think

As the OP I thought that I should give follow-up.

I looked at all possibilities for problem that continued even after upgrading the computer.

I had a Belkin bluetooth usb adapter plugged into the PC for use with a Bluetooth printer.

I have now removed and uninstalled the little adapter, and I think that this has solved my problems! I tested it for a day at the end of my trip and all seems well

Thanks for the support
