Opencpn loses GPS signal

Hi all. Not sure if this is a computer/Windoze issue or possibly an OpenCPN setting but I notice when running opencpn for an extended period my computer seems to lose its GPS connection. If I restart the computer it comes back but then after awhile it will lose it again. I dont believe it is a GPS/AIS issue as my other instruments continue to get the data without interruption. Im wondering if my laptop running windows 7 is perhaps going into some sleep mode or hibernation that when I wake it back up it doesn't maintain the GPS connection? I wake the computer back up by shaking the mouse and Open CPN fires right back up but no GPS or AIS data. I connect via USB to my AIS transceiver.

Re: Opencpn loses GPS signal

Ted..
I may have noticed the same behavior in my W7 navigational PC. But I never let it go into sleep or hibernation mode. If I want to safe power I just close the lid to switch the screen off.
Try to change Windows rules for power save to never go into sleep and just power of the screen when the lid is closed.

Re: Opencpn loses GPS signal

Good suggestion. I wonder if that would help with a bitlocked computer. I get tired of entering the pin each time. For win8.1 and win 10 I've been putting it into putting on a presentation mode, which uses more power.

Re: Opencpn loses GPS signal

Yes. Double check power options .You want the computer running at full capacity,
but CloseLid=sleep mode usually works ok for me. Opencpn generally gets the gps fired back up pretty quick...

particularly goto ControlPanel->System->Device Manager and then near the bottom, ->UsbRoothub. Double click, then PowerManagement. UNCHECK "allow ...turn off this device..."

And while you're in there, might as well goto Host Controllers->Advanced and stop some annoying messages

However, also remember OpenCPN wants to own the gps. Make sure no other app is accessing it at the same time.

These are just the minimal harness for Windows... It Might be the gps or even the usb power connection to motherboard. Stranger things have happened too so keep asking if it doesn't help
