Eyesight

I guess it just depends on how good your eyes are. If you have problems then it is probably not for you.

That's not entirely true, Objective C can he nicely combined with C and C++, the gui have to in some large parts be rewritten. But the main drawing functions can stay unchanged.

Porting OpenCPN will be a mayor effort thou, much because drawing and logic's code have been mixed up. Mayor re-factoring have to be done before a iPad or other gui framework can be added.

It's a mayor task, but not a total rewrite. Maybe thou a start form scratch pulling in the bit and pices needed in the places they are needed is the best model for a rewrite this big thou.

I don't think anyo9ne is working on that thou.

balp,

I second this. OpenCPN compiled as well with Xcode and Mac SDK with all its C and C++ sources for Mac OS X. So it should compile also for iOS when binding the iPad SDK and probabely some minor changes.

OSX and iOS are very different, it will not be a trivial exercise to get it running on an iPad

I agreemn tha MacOS port used wxWidgets still and that is not available, the vwWidgets are also mixed into some logics code making the change to a native iPad/iPhone or MacOS interface a challange.

Hi folks,

here are some screenshots running OpenCPN on iPhone and iPad...

Indeed not really, it is the Ubuntu version and the Windows version of OpenCPN running with Parallels in virtual machines on a MacBook and directed via WiFi with Parallels mobile app to the iPhone and the iPad. This solution allows perfect handling of OpenCPN via the touchscreens of iPhone or iPad.
So the required hardware is a MacBook laptop and/or an iPhone or iPad. The larger screen of the iPad is preferable. The iPad was used in landscape mode.

8.5 Acer

I have a 8.5 Acer net book as a backup computer on my boat, I dont think they make that particular model anymore, but it works fine, I have three nav programs on it, Opencpn, SeaClear, and Nobeltec. but it is just a backup, i have a acer desktop for full time Navigating.

I am not a Mac developer, but I believe that it should be possible to use C++ libraries on an iPad by recoding the UI in Objective C. After all, Objective C and C++ are just high-level languages - it's the binaries that count.

The idea of running the most popular free chartplotter on the most popular touchscreen GPS platform seems an obvious move. I mean, how many of us own touchscreen PCs with integral GPSes?

Yes you can, but compiling OpenCPN with out wxWidgets are much work and wxWidgets are pretty much all over the code. It's loots of work.

Agreed, there is even no running current version of OpenCPN for Mac OS X.

Sadly not, actually there is no current version for Mac OS X. But because you can run Windows software on Mac hardware (using BootCamp or Parallels) you can run the current Windows version of OpenCPN also with a Mac.

Re: OpenCPN on an iPad ?

I hate to dredge up an old thread...but with the pending release of the iPad 2 and the explosion of Droid based tablets, functionality of OpenCPN on tablets is moving from pie-in-the-sky feature request to a necessity.

I could see the days of PC's going the way of the Do-Do bird with the prevalence of these touch enabled devices.
