OpenCPN on Windows 8

Hello folks, just bought a new computer with windows 8 installed. Unfortunately, there is no com port on that machine... I have been trying for days to add one... no results.

Is anyone able to explain how to install a com port so that OpenCPN reads datas from my GPS dongle.

I have already installed the driver supplied with the device to no use.

Thanks

Re: OpenCPN on Windows 8

If the gps is wired for a serial port, there are converters serial to USB. However they are difficult to get working. If this is what you have, spend $32 and get a USB GPS. What follows assumes a USB GPS.

Go to Desktop>Right Click the Windows Icon>Device Manager>Ports(COM and LP)

Expand Ports and you will see the com port # for your device. Then follow the Opencpn manual.

Re: OpenCPN on Windows 8

On Win8/8.1 you have a Windows symbol in the lower left corner.
Right clicking this one brings up the mentioned options.

For the next time.....
