OpenCPN Version 4.8.8 Released

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
---------------------

07 November, 2018

OpenCPN Version 4.8.8 Released

The OpenCPN Development Team is proud to announce the release of OpenCPN Version 4.8.8

This version is a maintenance release of OpenCPN, improving reliability and compatibility for all supported platforms.

OpenCPN is a cross platform electronic navigation system (ECS) supporting a variety of cartography standards and hardware interface protocols. Versions are available for Linux, Windows, Macintosh, and ARM computer architectures.

OpenCPN is running on hardware from tiny Raspberry Pis with 4" screens up to networked workstations. Specific user scenarios and needs are easily accommodated by using the Plug-in architecture and the wide scope of user settings.
A responsive international user and developer community together with integrated documentation help make installation and use of OpenCPN a pleasure.

Some of the features of OpenCPN include

Quilted Raster(RNC) and Vector(ENC) digital chart display
Full compliant support for official vector charts in S-57/S-63 format and InlandENCs
Industry standard GPS receiver interfacing, with "moving map" on-screen vessel tracking
AIS receiver interfacing with configurable target safety monitoring
Integrated Route, Track, and Waypoint database, with industry standard Import/Export capabilities
Tide and Current prediction, with on-screen overlay of predicted data.
Broad International Language support
PlugIn architecture allowing on-going third-party functional enhancements

OpenCPN is released under the GPLV2 license. The executable program and its source code are available for immediate, free, and unlimited download from github.com, and several other public sources.

As a successor to OpenCPN Version 4.8.6, OpenCPN Version 4.8.8 contains several incremental corrections and improvements across all platforms.

Changes and improvements include:

1. Make higher baud rates available on POSIX systems where supported.
2. Update Finnish translations.
3. Improve plugin ENC overlay rendering.
4. Improve serial port detection logic on Mac systems.
5. Improve ENC update processing logic.

We hope you enjoy OpenCPN Version 4.8.8, and look forward to your continued feedback and support.

More information is available at opencpn.org

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.8 Released

Dave,

Creating a portable version of 4.8.8 has a new problem. When running a portable version from a memory stick an error appears "Cannot create crash report directory". See image. I need to know how to work around this error, please.

Also, the older problem remains of the CHRTLIST.DAT file being written outside the folder if the portable folder is created on the desktop.

Thanks, Terry

So are we to abandon having a portable version in the future?

I've equipped about a dozen cruisers with it and have very positive feedback.

Just wondering

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.8 Released

Terry, no, don't worry.

4.8.8 is an intermediate version, triggered by some specifics for ENC charts we have seen in the last weeks. And the Finnish translation was completely broken.

If you don't want to cruise in Finnish waters in the next months or you don't want to train Finnish, then you can stick with 4.8.6 safely.

You might consider to run a parallel install too, in case you need the higher baud rates for example.

When you create a serial connection several higher than "standard" baud rates can be selected. If your computer system supports the higher speeds they should now work. Before this release some Linux and Mac systems may have been speed limited.

Windows was never speed limited as far as I know so it always supported higher baud rates.

Thank you to tdan & others who implemented this fix so quickly, it's much appreciated by anyone using OpenCPN in conjunction with a ShipModul multiplexer (among others, I'm sure).

Cheers!

Trying to download CA RNC but they aren't working in 4.8.8. They show up as an .xml and are not seen by OPENcpn. Any suggestions?

Can you try to explain what "They show up as an .xml" means exactly? KAP charts sure are not XML so if you have a set of .xml files, they sure are not CA RNC charts.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.8 Released

I'm trying to update OpenCpn. First I tried 4.8.8, which upon installation gave me an error message that the program couldn't open many files.

Since I would be happy with 4.8.6, could someone tell me where I can find it to download? I looked in source forge and all I found was 4.2

I'm now at 4.8.0

If you are on Windows, you will find it at http://opencpn.navnux.org/4.8.6/opencpn_4.8.6_setup.exe
It is very highly unlikely it will solve the problem you had with 4.8.8, whatever that was (What comes to mind is that you might have older OpenCPN running while you tried to overwrite it with 4.8.8), though as they are 99.999% the same.
