Re: OpenCPN Version 5.5.x Beta Test Starts

Yachtvalhalla
This new functionality is supposed to allow to insert/append a part (or entire) route into the route being created. It should not be shown if the "nearby point" you have accepted to use is the last of the route to be inserting as it do nothing and can be confusing. May be it should not be shown at all if this point already belongs the route being created.
JP
edit : currently you must answer no because if yes, you will get two time the route

Yes it is confusing and I'd like to see it shown in an example.

It doesn't seem to apply when creating a polygon that's for sure.

Thanks, Terry

Terry
You are right it doesn't works properly when creating a polygon or any geographic form, which represent a loop and select yes, then go to the properties, you'll get two time the points and the length.
But in "normal" case, it works and can be very useful.
Take an existing route( or create it). let's say with point A,B,C.
Now create a new route point C, D, then a point nearby A and accept to use A, then answer yes to the question above. Your new route will include route ABC .You can stop or continue with points E,F...
you new route will be C,D,A,B,C,E,F...
and the route A,B,C still exists.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.5.x Beta Test Starts

Testing the flatpak version on Ubuntu 20.04 I get the following error after updating flatpak:

Quote:
~$ flatpak run org.opencpn.OpenCPN//beta
error: app/org.opencpn.OpenCPN/x86_64/beta not installed
Looks like flatpak is not updated properly, or is it the old x86_64 naming problem popping up again?

OK thanks for the explanation.

Just another confusion/nuisance factor for those who routinely create polygons while making satellite imagery charts.

Since you say it doesn't work properly perhaps (hopefully) it will be removed.

cagney...

$flatpak list

will show what you have available, as is known to flatpak.

try:
$ flatpak install --user https://flathub.org/beta-repo/appstr...CPN.flatpakref

Thanks

What is this supposed to mean or do if answering 'Yes'?

This version of OpenCPN gives you the possibility to merge and combine routes.

Suppose you are making a new route A, or appending an existing route A. While doing so you click on a waypoint of a route B. Now you are asked the question: "Append (part of) this route to the new route?". So you have the possibility to append the remaining part of B to the route A you are currently making. This can be useful, earlier you had to manually click all the waypoints of B that you wanted to include (and confirm "Yes" each time).

In your example however the route B you click on is the same as the route A you are making. So you are asked if you want to append the route you just made to the route you are making. Answer "No" and it will be as before. If you answer "Yes", you will append the polygon you made to the route once more. You will go round two times. You could continue like this, click on the next waypoint, get the same question again, and double the route again, go round 4 times. Look in route properties to see the sequence of waypoints. So this is perfectly legal within the current setup. Looks like a gimmick, but in case you want a route that goes round more times, it helps.

But on the other side appending the current route to the current route could be confusing. It would be simple to disable the appending function when the appending part is on the current route itself. But one would loose a feature to make circular routes. Any opinions?

You are right. When dragging the last point of a route A to the last point of another route B you are asked the question if you want to append the rest of B in the dragged route. This is useless, as there is nothing to append. I will make a PR to correct this and take out the question at that point.

It is not done for all cases, only partly. Who is going to do this right?

Layers Tab/Show WPT names?

The 'Show WPT names' checkbox on the Layers tab of the Route and Mark Manager doesn't seem to change anything. Should it?

Layers Tab Selections

The 'Import GPX' selection does not work.

The 'Export All Visible ..' selection is of doubtful utility.

I suspect these are holdovers from other tabs and should be greyed out.
