OpenCPN Version 5.5.x Beta Test Starts

Ahoy OpenCPN Users!

OpenCPN version 5.5.920 is now ready to begin Beta testing.
We plan to test this version thoroughly over the next few weeks, updated as necessary, leading to a general release of OpenCPN Version 5.6.0 this fall.


First, how do you get and install OpenCPN Version 5.5.x Beta?

1. Windows

Packages for installation of OCPN 5.5.x (amd64/arm64/armhf) are available from the OpenCPN Beta repository at the Ubuntu Launchpad.

You may add this repo to your apt sources list, and install or upgrade OCPN 5.5.x for your distro using your normal O/S tools. (apt, synaptic, etc.)

Then what?
Please report your testing progress and issues in this thread. We would like to see testing in as many varied environments as practical. Developers will be monitoring closely, sometimes requesting further specific tests or information. You may expect to see several Beta releases before the official Production release.

A note on Plugins:
The legacy method of installing Plugins by separate "installer" app is now officially deprecated. Older Plugin installers will no longer be updated for normal Plugin improvements. All Plugins are to be installed and updated using the integral Plugin Manager within OCPN 5.x. On Plugin bug reports: While we will acknowledge Plugin bug reports here, the focus of this Beta test is to validate the OCPN core 5.5.x for general release. Please keep this in mind as you test.

The full list of Features and Bug Fixes to be found in O5.5.x will follow in a separate posting.

Regarding language translations for OCPN 5.5.x:
New templates have been uploaded to crowdin, ready for translation to your respective languages. The core program, as well as the four default Plugins have been updated. These are some new translatable items. We will incorporate updated translations in each Beta release as received.

Ahoy OpenCPN Users!

Here you will find a nearly complete list of the Feature additions and Bug fixes incorporated in OCPN 5.5.x Beta.

Most of these changes are the result of Flyspray issues, accumulated over some time. Since OCPN 5.5.x is an incremental update to the basic functionality of OCPN 5.2.4, critical developer resources were somewhat more available to address older outstanding problems and requests in this cycle. As a result, these outstanding Flyspray issues were able to receive direct attention in this release, with some success.

Speaking of Flyspray:
If you are the "owner" or OP of any of these listed Flyspray tasks, please check the associated functions in OCPN 5.5.x, and then clear the Flyspray task if able. We really do use the Flyspray task lists as active "work item lists", and our goal is to drive the list down in size. We would especially like to drive the Bug Report Task lists down to zero. We can only do this if the Tasks are closed by the OP as resolved.

- Tool bar is misplaced and will cover the "Window LEDS" (or how those are called...)


- Fonts changed to some Serif font in Settings or AIS targets


- Message about Permit to take Screenshots. I think we have seen this in the past.



- Plug-ins fail to load but the build-in ones (example for one from the log. The others look the same)

OpenCPN is crashing at start-up.
It was already the case with the unstable development downloads...
Maybe he is requiring new MFC runtime ? If Yes which ?

When starting in safe mode, it looks to be working

Thanks for the good work.


Running Ubuntu 20.04 Updated O from the PPA.


On starting O, I get two error messages:

../src/gtk/window.cpp(5106): assert "increment > 0" failed in IsScrollIncrement().

If I click

continue

all seems to work without further problems.


See attached error messages and log file. Remove ".pdf" from the names.

plang732's observation on Win10 updating direct from 5.2.4 is also reported from one of "my" users. Direct crash at O start. No opencpn.log printed. I've not yet been able to look further into it. Will try tomorrow. Hints?

On BBN OS OpenCPN 5.5.90 plugin toolbar is misplaced and covers main menu. It’s not draggable by mouse or touchscreen.

Plugins show version 0.0.0.

Normal debugging procedure with no-start:

1. Try with empty config (.ini) file.
2. Try with no plugins enabled.
3. From 1/2, isolate the offending element.

If it starts and runs correctly in "safe" mode, then it must be that one or more plugins are crashing.
Please manually edit your opencpn.ini file, disable all plugins, and then add back one-by-one until the offending item is discovered.

Another fellow reports the attached error message during installation: But after a click OK all is working as it should. Also Win10.
The message says: Sequence number 385 can't be found in the DLL file c:\program files(x86)\OpenCPN\libcurl.dll
