Re: OpenCPN Version 5.7.1 Beta Test #3

Add ECMWF to grib plugin email requests?

some ECMWF data are available since March 2022 via query@saildocs.com:
WIND, MSLP, HGT500, TEMP (2m air temp) and WAVES

Having another global model besides GFS to compare forecasts / trends, beyond a couple days, is valuable.

From saildocs:
Quote:
NOTICE:
From 8-Mar 2022, ECMWF "Essential" is replaced with ECMWF "Open Data", now available without charge. Parameters are limited compared to full ECMWF access and the data is delayed about one hour.

Global forecast data is available from 0-144 hours at 3-hour increments, and 150-240 hours at 6-hour increments. The data grid is 0.4-deg, and available parameters at this time are WIND, MSLP, HGT500, TEMP (2m air temp) and WAVES (sig wave height). Data is updated every 12 hours, and available by 8 hours after the synoptic time e.g. 08:00 utc for the 00z model-run. The request code remains "ECMWF".

Usage is subject to the ECMWF terms and conditions, refer to "Gribmodels" (https://saildocs.com/gribmodels).

Agree with the proposal of LeaseOnLife. Big fan of ECMWF data.

The Windy app has superb presentation of eight different forecast models including ECMWF. A small sub gets you the ten day forecast. I cannot imagine any OCPN display getting anywhere near it.
I realise this is getting off topic, so let’s not debate here.

Windy is of no use to most of us at sea! Where does the bandwidth come from. Whereas the data from saildocs is accessible provided you can send and receive a simple email.

I can only assume you are trolling? Or don't sail offshore without bandwidth!

As importantly I would like to see ww3 added too - for very accurate wave modelling. Along with the full gamut of GFS parameters (only a very small subset is supported at the moment).

I suppose none of this is OCPN base app issue any.. it is for the GRIB plugin.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.7.1 Beta Test #3

Just a question

test W11 - last master

OpenGL ON
OpenGL options: "texture compression with catching" ON

Texture catch size is always 0.0 MB

Is it normal ?
Thanks
JP

JP...
"texture compression with catching" only applies to RNCs, i.e. raster charts. If you do not use them, then the cache remains empty.

Thanks

All problems seems to be solved. Time for the release of OpenCPN 5.8.0 in prime time ?

Before a formal release is there any chance someone could take a look at the three mbtiles issues I've mentioned in Beta2 and Beta3? In summary they are:

Beta 2 #1: I have three mbtiles on the screen here but only two of them warrant piano bars, the smaller one at the upper right is missing. Is there a setting somewhere to increase the visibility threshold or something? (Edit: This is possibly related to the Beta3 #1 issue below).

Beta2 #2: Perhaps this is intentional but when you turn an mbtiles chart off there is no longer a red X in it's rectangle in the piano bar to indicate so.

Beta3 #1: Mbtiles only seem to display or appear on the piano bar if they cover the centre of the screen. Their outline does display all the time assuming view-outlines is selected.

I'm working on producing a set of mbtiles overlays for OpenCpn for the nooks and crannys of Ireland and these are important issues for that project.

Many thanks,

Aedan

This is normal behavior of OCPN, at least on O562, and maybe since MBtiles were introduced. It may be a useful upgrade to do as you suggest, but it is not today considered a bug.

Probably a bug. I'll check.

This is definitely related to the Beta3 #1 issue.

Dave

Thanks for the reply Dave. I appreciate this is not of major concern at the moment.

Nos 1 and 3 are probably ok if you are looking at a single large mbtile covering a decent area, however it gets a bit messy when producing a set of small files covering specific areas. I'm producing a set of chartlets of all the nooks and crannies of Ireland and some of them butt against each other, so as you cross that boundary you can never have detail in them both at the same time. I think it's worth some attention sometime if OpenCpn is to support mbtiles fully.

Cheers,

Aedan

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.7.1 Beta Test #3

Hi again Dave,

I've just noticed that Nos 1 and 3 did not seem to be there on version 5.2.4 on Debian, previous experiments were on Windows.

Best regards,

Aedan

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.7.1 Beta Test #3

There is indeed something strange going on with mbtiles. In the middel of the screen there is a switch to bigger scale charts. Along the edges it is lagging behind. On linux ubuntu 22.4 with gtk3 and wxwidgets 3.3
