1. RPi/4

yes, that's correct.

Linux Q64 5.10.103-v7l+ #1529 SMP Tue Mar 8 12:24:00 GMT 2022 armv7l GNU/Linux

The plugins (grib, dashboard & chartdldr_pi) are from the latest opencpn main git branch though a few others were installed using the app itself. I have an old tactics_pi that I've built though I don't think that's causing issues as my clean install doesn't see it nor is it using any of the other plugins (not installed under .opencpn/plugins dir).

I have corrected this behavior, in github master now. You may like to test on Windows here:

Please let me know how this goes.

All good on cut and paste now. Thanks

sanner...

I'll assume you have your reasons for using ARMHF on RPi4....
Since no-one else experiences your issue, I think the quickest way to resolve is to go back to a point in time that works, and do git bisect forward to isolate the offending commit.

Thanks
Dave

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.7.1 Beta Test #4

Thanks Dave

I'm running 32bit kernel as that's all there was when I built my current onboard server. Once I upgrade the hardware (RPi5 in 2025?) I'll do a 64b clean install. That is unless there's an in-place 32-64b upgrade method that has improved in the last year or so?

Or is just bumping up the kernel to aarch64 recommended?

Did you try to upgrade the system:

sudo apt update en then sudo apt-get upgrade.

You can also install the latest kernel version with sudo rpi-update.

RPI4 running here with Debian Bullseye/Raspian, Ubuntu Kinetic, Fedora Rawhide. All 64 bits.

There are so many improvements only by the software.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.7.1 Beta Test #4

Thanks for the tips..

I run 'apt upgrade' regularly but I only run rpi-update sparingly (as recommended by rpi-update script).
But it's been awhile so I went ahead (after jumping through a few hoops as I had to resize my boot partition)

Fingers crossed I rebooted and was able to (via reverse ssh) connect back to my server onboard. I hope I'm not too much on the bleeding edge but should be a good test platform at least. (aarch64 w/ kernel 6.1.19)

uname -a

Linux Q64 6.1.19-v8+ #1637 SMP PREEMPT Tue Mar 14 11:11:47 GMT 2023 aarch64 GNU/Linux
--
I quickly tested OC, looks good but when I disable the grib plugin it still crashed on startup just like before. Rebuilding OC but unlikely bill will report back if it helps.

Why don’t you just install 64-bit OS on different SD card and test?

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.7.1 Beta Test #4

I've got a work around (I just don't disable grib/dashboard). I thought others might have the same issue but looks like it might be something with my install. I tried on another Pi4 (with same build & plugins and it worked fine) so likely something at the system level or graphics.

I just tried again w/ clean /usr/local/{share,lib}/opencpn dirs and with a new make install I have the same problem.

No need to spend any more time on this, thx... if I discover the issue I'll report back. Will git bisec be my friend?

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.7.1 Beta Test #4

Downloaded latest for windows ver 5.7.1+49f3efe

the installation has removed some plugins from previous install, after re-install the required there are another plugins I cannot find in the "master" catalogue these ones:
  • AIS RADAR view
  • Engine Dashboard
  • OCPN draw

maybe another ones has reported the same but just in case, is there another way of install such plugins?
or have they been supersede by another similar plugins?

Corsair..
The mentioned plugins are probably not yet build for Win 5.7.xx using wxWidgets 3.2.x. These plugins needs to be updated. Not all plugin developers are "on it" like others and some may be out sailing?

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.7.1 Beta Test #4

You have upgraded Opencpn from 562 to 571 and since a new version of wxwidgets is being used, we need to build new plugins for that. For most pi this has been done

Please update your maste catalog options > plugins and reinstall the newer pi. Most are there.
Ocpn_draw is in the beta catalog but works well. Statusbar and AisRadar are in the garage for repairs by the authors. Wxroute and wxweather and the others are generally done.
Working on a version of watchdog that hopefully has pypilot alarms and rudder alarms. There is a lesser one that works.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.7.1 Beta Test #4

I've just found a significant bug in 5.7.1+ffe26 (downloaded from a link here on 3/11). This is associated with being able to adjust positioning of a CM93 chart.

We out in the western Pacific and SE Asia use CM93 charts because there are, in some places, no other electronic chart coverage. Sometimes there are large discrepancies in the chart (the chart may be mostly accurately drawn, but not accurately placed--sometimes off as much as half a mile). So the ability to MOVE the chart to more closely line up with reality can be a big help for us.
In the previous release (5.6.2), we discovered a bug with the mechanism to reposition a chart, just after the release. I think it was bdbcat that made a fix and gave me a version that had the fix in it, and I have been using that for the last year. It works/worked fine in 5.6.2 with this fix. (I don't know if ever got mainstreamed).
It just occurred to me to test the CM93 Offset Dialog in the 5.7.1 beta.
To my dismay, I found that the problem is now even worse. OpenCPN Crashes. I can reproduce every time, so hopefully it is easy to fix and isolated to that one function.
Windows 10, here's the sequence:
Start OpenCPN with CM93 chart loaded.
Use F9 to turn off chart quilting
- Once chart quilting is off, (you know this by the chart bubbles turn from rounded corners to sharp corners), right clicking on the chart table includes a new menu item "CM93 Offset Dialog"
- Right click and select CM93 Offset Dialog
- A window pops up. To change the offsets, you need to click in the cell number line in the pop up. As soon as you do that, OpenCPN Crashes.
Attached is a picture of the CM93 Offset Dialog on top of the grossly offset CM93 chart. To be in the right place, this chart needs to be moved almost 1nm NNE from where it is, so the red line (our actual track) goes south of the island in the center of the picture.

SoggyPaws...
Our old nemesis, cm93 Offset Adjustment, returns to haunt us....

I have corrected the crash, and I would appreciate it if you could install the latest build and test it with your normal workflow.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.7.1 Beta Test #4

bdbcat,
THANK YOU! Really appreciate you taking the time to fix this. Critical to us off-the-beaten-path cruisers. We of course also use mbtiles, others' tracks, and several other charting sources (different apps like Navionics on a tablet) in areas like this, but having a chart so far off is very disorienting! As you can see, the adjusted chart here is still not perfect, but it's better than nothing at all.
