OpenCPN Version 5.8.2 Released

1 May, 2023
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The OpenCPN Development Team is proud to announce the release of OpenCPN Version 5.8.2.
OpenCPN Version 5.8.2 is available for immediate download.

This version is a maintenance release of OpenCPN.

OpenCPN is a cross platform electronic navigation system (ECS) supporting a variety of cartography standards and hardware interface protocols. Versions are available for linux, Windows, Raspberry Pi, and MacOS computer architectures.

Some features of OpenCPN include:
- Quilted Raster(RNC) and Vector(ENC) digital chart display.
- Support for MBTiles photo and geographical chart overlays.
- Industry standard GPS receiver interfacing, with "moving map" on-screen vessel tracking.
- AIS receiver interfacing with configurable target safety monitoring.
- Integrated Route, Track, and Waypoint database, with industry standard Import/Export capabilities.
- Tide and Current prediction, with on-screen overlay of predicted data.
- Broad International Language support.
- PlugIn architecture allowing on-going third-party functional enhancements.

OpenCPN is released under the GPLV2 license. The executable program and its source code are available for immediate, free, and unlimited download from github.com.

OpenCPN Version 5.8.2 contains new features and enhanced functions.

New:

- Integrated NMEA 2000 network capability, supporting a variety of popular bus interface adapters

- Peer-to-peer networking functions, allow sharing of objects (routes/tracks/waypoints) between interconnected OpenCPN devices.

- Redesigned navigational and environmental sensor prioritization feature, allowing multiple redundant fail-over safety modes.

- Updated core wxWidgets support to wx3.2.

- Full support for scaled display modes on Windows.

- Full support for Flatpak on virtually all linux distributions, for both x86 and Arm architectures.

- Improved native support for generic Debian linux distributions, particularly plugin system.

- Full recognition as an official system for Information Mode on European Inland Waters.

- Improved OpenGL graphics support and performance on all platforms.

- Incorporate extensive user feedback to resolve various UI flaws and functional errors.

We hope you enjoy the new features of OpenCPN Version 5.8.2, and look forward to your continued feedback.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.2 Released

Installed today in a clean Debian 11 installation over X86. O582 installation after Debian has been done correctly and without errors. When click in the icon to run O582, starts a window and stops in seconds.

The last line of the log is:

16:03.07.312 MESSAGE ocpn_app.cpp:1962 OpenCPN Initialized in 2080ms.

and nothing happens.

Next trials ask about start without plugins and .... and it's indiferent to click Yes or No. No entries in the log after the first run.

Deleting home OpenCPN folder repeat the process from the beginning.
Any help?

SOS...
For debian 11 (Bullseye), you should be using ubuntu "focal".

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.2 Released

Thanks Dave for the suggestion.

Using focal instead of bionic (bionic is mentioned in OpenCPN doc): same behavior and same opencpn.log file content.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.2 Released

Hi all

Thanks for this new release. Works perfectly for now.

But current master built has a problem. On my W11 22H2 device, the display is partly broken :
"hamburger" menu is partly hidden (see screen attached)
All texts are "bolt" and if I choose "bolt" in font parameters, texts become very "fat" as on an old screen
In fact, this is the "Update the Windows application manifest to support new DPI awareness features" commit which create this. Reverting it and every thing's OK
Have I something to change in my process/parameters ?
Thanks
JP

Will you provide a rough translation of the messages on MacM2?

Thanks

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.2 Released

In your last version 5.8.0-0+461 the colours are more accentuate than the version 5.8.2 and also the soundings ENC are more darker on Windows 10.
It has nothing to to with my video card. Why so?
Have a good day.

JP...
master branch is again in full development mode, you may expect any kind of breakage there at any moment. For O5.8 builds, use branch v5.8.x
The updated manifest is the start of the way towards proper multi-monitor mixed DPI support on Windows, where quite a few current workarounds for scaling issues will have to be replaced. Please open github issues for this kind of glitches as you find them.

More information:

I ran opencpn from the terminal command line, the OpenCPN window opens a few seconds and this is the output obtained in the terminal.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.2 Released

SOS...
Please try the following:
1. Rename the directory ~/.local/lib/opencpn to something safe, like "opencpn.save". We want to retain the contents for debug, but make it invisible to opencpn by renaming.
2. Start OCPN normally. There will be no plugins available initially.
3. If this works, then what we want to do is determine which plugin in ~/.local/lib/opencpn.save is the one that causes the fault.
4. So, one-by-one, copy the saved plugins (.so files) back into ~/.local/lib/opencpn, starting OCPN after each copy.
5. Hopefully, this will lead to the offending plugin.

Thanks
Dave
