Re: Naming routes

When a new route is created and given a name in the Properties dialog, the name does not appear in the Route and Mark Manager when the Properties dialog is closed. The name does appear with the route wherever it is exported. It also appears if either the Route and Mark Manager or the O5 program is closed and relaunched.

Annoying.

Just wanted to let you know the link for the Mac version in the initial post is wrong, it should be this:

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 Beta Starts Typo?

The Waypoint Properties Extended page allows defining the scale at which a waypoint can be shown.

I believe the intent of this feature is to suppress the display of the waypoints and their descriptive writing which can obscure the display of land masses, etc. at large scales. See the two images. Here I have defined the ratio to be 1:5,000,000 so that the waypoints are displayed at scales less than 5,000,000 but not displayed above that scale.

Presently the Extended page uses the 'greater than' (>) symbol. Third image.

I think it should be the 'less than' symbol (<) to be grammatically correct. The scale is being represented by a ratio, not to be confused with the use of terms 'large scale' versus 'small scale' charts.

A nitpicker picking a nit? Or am I wrong? (which wouldn't be the first time)

As an aside, I think this feature is intended for routes as well but not yet implemented. If it were, those remaining blurbs on the large scaled image would also be gone.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 Beta Starts

1:1,500,000 is a larger scale than 1:5,000,000 so I do not see any problem.
I would understand you if the ">" symbol was after the ":", but it is not.

Terry..
Scales-- Well 1 > 1/2 > 1/25 and so on. So show at a scale > 1:350000 would be correct?

Pavel's note before would be evaluated to: It's corrected in Github master. And that I can confirm.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 Beta Starts

I installed the 4.99 Beta on my Windows computer. No problems. My first reaction was "How ugly!" but as I read more about it I decided I could get used to the new look and new organization. I see many positive changes, though it will be a while before I figure out how to use them to advantage.

The Windows computer is pretty useless for navigation because there are no drivers for my GPS receivers. The boat computer runs Linux because it still works with the GPS. So I added the new repository

Code:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bdbcat/opencpn
and figured I'd soon have the new version running on the Linux computer. No luck. I still have 4.8.7. Fortunately I didn't stay up too late trying to figure it out. This morning it was immediately clear. There is no published OpenCPN package for trusty1. I hope that's just a short-term oversight that will soon be taken care of because my two Ubuntu Linux computers won't run anything newer than 14.04. Any chance of getting OpenCPN for my old version of Ubuntu soon?

Fabbian...

Why not update to a modern LTS of Ubuntu? Trusty is EOL this year...

I agree with Dave.

If necessary, use a less hungry variant of Ubuntu such as Kubuntu or Lubuntu.

I have a Windows XP era netbook that runs Ubuntu 18.04. Yes it is slow, but does the work with OpenCPN.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 Beta Starts

I tried Lubuntu 18.10 but it wouldn't install. Said the computer didn't have the resources to run it. More specifically, it said there wasn't enough working memory, 1 GB was required. Looks like I may have to go back to Windows 7 (I still have the recovery disks for my Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5136). I switched to Linux because Windows was so slow. Ubuntu 12.04 ran great. 14.04 was adequate. I rejected 16.04 because it would barely run.

Feature creep is worse in operating systems than applications. It seems like every new computer I've bought has just enough resources to run the operating system that ships with it plus one or two applications. Most of the additional storage and processing power just goes to run a more resource-hungry operating system.

No matter. Maybe it's time for me to invest in some new hardware. I just hate to discard perfectly functional equipment because the software has outgrown it.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 Beta Starts

Trying to compile 'survey_pi'.

Using "virtual bool RenderOverlay(wxMemoryDC *pmdc, PlugIn_ViewPort *vp)" from 'ocpn_plugin.h'.

Other errors but one that comes up:

Code:
error C2061: syntax error: identifier 'wxMemoryDC'
Notice that Grib_pi uses 'RenderOverlay(wxDC'

Does 'ocpn_plugin.h' have an error with using 'RenderOverlay(wxMemoryDC'?

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 Beta Starts

Yesterday I reverted my Toshiba Satellite to Windows 7. I installed OpenCPN 4.99.1408+0395280 with no difficulty but when I tried to launch it the program quit responding. After waiting a while I restarted the computer and installed OpenCPN 4.8.8. The installation went smoothly, the program launched, and started rebuilding the chart database. Once that was done I was able to reinstall 4.99.1408+0395280 and launch it with no problem.

Has anyone else had a problem with a new install as opposed to an update?

I have a lot of charts (all the US RNCs, ENCs, and IENCs plus some from a few other sources) but I didn't load any ENCs initially. The computer is a bit light on resources (3GB memory, 763MB usable, AMD Athlon II P340 Dual-Core Processor at 2.20GHz, 300GB hard drive) but it's more powerful than a Rasberry Pi, so I didn't expect any trouble running OpenCPN.

And I haven't had a problem running OpenCPN 4.99.1408+0395280 as an upgrade installation, only as a new installation.
