Re: OpenCPN Weather Routing Plugin error

Dockhead,
We know of several pesky bugs that have not been fixed.
Thanks for your efforts, you may have found another.

I will the same to see if I can recreate it.
Can you advise what version of WR you are using?
Also specifically where you are getting the grib so I can download one?
Or maybe you can upload a small one somewhere so I can try that?
To confirm, this is in the Baltic?

Thanks.

I'm using v1.13, freshly downloaded since my nav computer blew up a couple of weeks ago. O v. 5.2.4+6b314e6.

Once I enabled climatology, the "failed:grib" failures stopped, but then it looks like some other gribs than the current ones get overlaid on the chart. It's now routing without land problems but the routes lead over land. Does it matter which chart is selected when the routing is run? I will do some experiments.

Re: OpenCPN Weather Routing Plugin error

OK, so I see I need the GSHHG basemap. Somehow missed that.

So looks like a bunch of user errors, not a bug.

Last issue is getting the plugin to convert .pol to .xlm files but I think I'll crack that along the way somewhere.

Re: OpenCPN Weather Routing Plugin error

Dockhead
Thankyou for persisting.

"Once I enabled climatology, the "failed:grib" failures stopped, but then it looks like some other gribs than the current ones get overlaid on the chart."
That is probably the climatology indications showing up on your screen, try toggling it to be sure. Do you have the climatology drop down selected for that configuration? Try turning climatology requirement off at the configuration dropdown and then see if it routes without climatology.
Normally if you have climatology installed and enabled and you have the configuration set to use climatology, then climatology will automatically be opened by the plugin and used.

"OK, so I see I need the GSHHG basemap. Somehow missed that."
Also you must use chartdownloder to download the high res gribs.

"So looks like a bunch of user errors, not a bug."
No actually it was new configuration errors I think. It is easy to forget some of this if it is just working.

You can use the polar_pi editor or any editor to change the formats. Is xlm format for expedition?

Next update coming shortly will have 700+ polars which BillFree has formated into a standard format for us all.

Re: OpenCPN Weather Routing Plugin error

After installing the base map, I now get "ground failure" again

I seem to still be a long way from figuring this out.

Re: OpenCPN Weather Routing Plugin error

It should be the Full Resolution GSHHG selected from within Chartdownloader.

It will prompt a full scan of all charts.

It is. But again the ground error.

I guess I will have to go back to your suggestion to draw borders.

Re: OpenCPN Weather Routing Plugin error

Ok, Dockhead, you are right. There are problems.

Using v1.13.22.0 and a recent 16 day grib for the great lakes. With Climatology not "enabled" under Options Plugins, but showing "Most Likely" in a frozen dropdown.

First Problem
I found that with Land Detect OFF it would route between the points selected.
With land Detect ON it would only route part way, and fail for no readily apparent reason.

Second Problem
Then I could not select "disabled" because the dropdown was frozen.

After turning on Climatology and being able to operate the dropdown but leaving it on "Most Likely" in the WR Menu I ran the above two tests with the same results so they are likely separate issues.

I then selected "Disable" from the WR menu and got the same results as above.

I believe we need to revert some wxFormBuilder changes to fix the Climatology problem. I am not sure where the other problem is coming from.

Re: OpenCPN Weather Routing Plugin error

I have also checked it in the oceans, and it seems to be working perfectly well, with all the conditions tested above. I need to get some land mass in the routing however.

And I am inclined to think that this is the way Climatology enabled/disabled works as it always has worked so we don't need to undo the formatting with wxFormBuilder.

The problem has something to do with the Land Detection algoritym and the GSHHS when in lakes.

Re: OpenCPN Weather Routing Plugin error

OK, cool. I hope you can get it working properly, because it's a fantastic tool.

Re: OpenCPN Weather Routing Plugin error

To get this fixed we need to identify what is restricting the calculations to be just a certain box size. I don't find any routing parameters that affect the box size, so I think it is some programming issue between WxRoute and GSHHS.

For awhile I thought it was due to weather_routing looking at some extraneous low res version of GSHHS and I looked for the path to GSHHS in wxRoute, but that is not available to us. Note that nNo matter where you try to place start and end points the area calculated is about the same.

Re: OpenCPN Weather Routing Plugin error

Please note that while this may seem to be a minor problem to most people, it is a huge problem for others in inland lakes and bodies of water like the baltic.

This needs to be fixed!
and I can't do it. We need a good programmer here.

Re: OpenCPN Weather Routing Plugin error

Weather_routing 1.13.30.0 reverting example boat.xml and polar files and updating to TP 1.0174 frontend has been pushed to plugins.

Re: OpenCPN Weather Routing Plugin error

Workaround: Inland Waters & Lakes Land Detection GSHHS Bug

1. Create a boundary with Ocpn-Draw
2. Enable Boundaries in WR.

We would like some help from a good programmer to fix this and some other obscure but annoying bugs.
