OpenCPN WebSite Bootstrap

May I have your attention, please....

News:
Thanks to the generous in-kind contribution from Yme Bosma, and the stellar bird-dogging of Mark Sikes (Psyches)....

We now have ownership and control of

opencpn.org.... and....
opencpn.com

The URLs are presently parked awaiting content.

So, a plan:

1. I'm looking for a volunteer/nomination for opencpn.org Webmaster
What is a Webmaster, you say? I can't do much better than this:

Webmaster - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Additional duties for the opencpn Webmaster will include the coordination of all anticipated volunteer content generation and integration into the site.

While it sounds daunting, I think the job may be fun and rewarding, good resume line for those in the biz, and a chance the meet lots of interesting cruisers and designers.

2. We need rack space hosting for the web site.
I am by this thread requesting the gratis donation of opencpn site hosting. We will need a few hundred gigabytes of storage, some scripting capabilities, and good bandwidth to the backbone. More technical details will follow...

If any forum members have knowledge or contacts in this area, please come forward and speak up.

This thread will be used for initial coordination of the Web site activity, and probably will have served its purpose once the site is up and running.

So, there you have it. Progress!
I look forward to all comments.

Thanks again to Yme and Mark....
Dave

I think it would be clever to leave the actual CVS and files at sourceforge, which would reduce hosting to information/advertising and help, thereby vastly reducing bandwidth overhead..

idpnd....

Good idea. I plan to leave the CVS hosting and application setup downloads at sourceforge indefinitely.

However, I expect that our site will eventually become home to some private chart-like things, KML overlays, scanned images, Wiki, Betas, etc. So we need to be thinking on the larger size for opencpn storage requirements.

Congratulations Dave!!

Things certainly are moving forward....
If you do not find any FREE space,I can throroughly recomment AMHosting based in Reno. I have been their customer for around 8 years since they started. They have fast equipment and safe backups and cover most scripting languages.
US$ 15 a month for 250 Giga with a bandwith of 250 Giga can't be bad.

Have a look:

Very good Dave,

I would say; lets open a paypal account and ask the openCPN users for a small donation (lets say $5 or $10). That way you can buy some space, have full control, not have to say Thank you and not have to pray for the same conditions next year.

Bart

PS, not offering my help as Webmaster doesn’t mean I don’t want to offer any help with the development of the website

I would be willing to upgrade my shared hosting plan to accommodate hosting opencpn.org/com. I'm supposed to have "unlimited" bandwidth and disk space... whatever "unlimited" means in lawyer double-speak ... hosting plan includes php5, ror, mysql, python, perl, etc, etc.

Dave, is there a particular content management system or ... that you'd prefer?

Will

Manimaul....

Thanks for the offer. We already have an offer for a gratis web host with full capabilities.

What we really need to move forward is a Webmaster volunteer.....
Any fresh takers?

Thanks again
Dave

webmaster

OK, I've thought about it a while now. I'm willing to take this on if you haven't found a webmaster volunteer yet. Hopefully, the existing host is Linux, Apache, Mysql, PHP as open source web technologies is where my expertise lies.

I would be willing to assist, although my knowledge is limited to simple drupal installations (consult my signature) and linux server maintenance in the widest sense. Perhaps I could assist Mani to some extent.

Please PM me with your email addresses, so we can get started on the details.
I probably already have them, but want to double-check.

Hi all.

I have just come across OpenCPN and think its a fantastic peice of work. I notice you have got a new site up and wondered if you where considering running you own forums.

If so, can I recomend phpBB. A very nice open source forum soloution. It looks very similar to the software in use now. I would be up for setting this up as I would love to contribute and this is something I could do. My programming skills are of little use. Im just past "Hello world"

I fiddle about with linux a bit and have set up a few basic sites and would love to help in any way I can.
