I found both versions worked for me, creating the file

I'm afraid you have not understand:
Times ago Konni has made already installation routines for plugins and Hakan tries to invent the wheel a second time now.
Sadly nobody payed attention about Konni suggestions and so he leaved this community.
Of course this has happened before you have taken the coordinator job...

Re: Plugin distribution

Hakan, As I understand the situation, we need a means of simplifying the installation of plugins:
1. Language files for plugins - simplify and make this part autmatic for the user.
2. Other plugin data files - I certainly need one for Sean's pluggins (Windows).

You are leading the way and I hope to learn from you, so I can create some single exe plugin files that can be downloaded by the user and executed to install all necessary files including language and data files.

So do not be intrepid. This is a vital thing that needs to be done. We may be following in the path of Konni, but he has not left a trail. We know it can be done by his example, but it does not show us HOW to do it.

I hope when we finish we can write a paragraph in the Developer Manual for creating Plugin Install files under Internationalization and under a new Plugin Installation Exe paragraph.

Thanks

Gerhard, I am very sorry to hear that.... Konni was clearly way ahead in many ways, and I do hope he can come back sometime soon. His Logbook and Findit and Polar plugins are very good. We do need his skills and I do not intend to take anyone's place!!!

Can you direct us to where we would learn more about Konni's worK or how we can contact Konni? You certainly have more history...

Or should we just continue...?

Thanks so much.

You are a bit much at times.
It's not the first time you're in to sniping at the OpenCPN community. Absolute crap. I suppose that in your world the community is responsible for Konni's unfortunate health problem as well.
With your great insight into things, why didn't you champion Konni's ideas at the time?
What's you problem? Keep your sour grapes to your self and help introducing the installer instead!
What about using your superior insights into things, to come up with a working installer for Mac! That - would be a contribution to OpenCPN.

I was not aware of Konni's work on a general windows plugin installer.
The sensible thing to do, would be for you guys to study what Konni has already done. See if it is useful, as it's no point in reinventing the wheel, and if it is, take it as a new starting point.
Konni's git code is available here:

Yes, I know Konni very well. He has typed with one finger only on his computer because of his illness. He has had many nice ideas und begged several times to make some changes in the main code to make his ideas running. But it was not done. So after all he was frustated and not only because of his illness.

To talk about the installer, the NSI scripts of Konni are still in Git to take them as an example. No need to invent again. Perhaps only a description is needed how to use them for every plugin developer.

Re: Plugin Distribution

Just once again to any developer out there that is frustrated............
Dave is not following every thread on this forum...

The best procedure to get your request into OpenCPN is to come up with a patch for the features you want, and enter a pull request in Git.

The next best procedure is to enter a feature request i the tracker, but this could take time, so be patient and persistent. Try to convince others of the merits in your ideas. Start your own thread for example.

Re: Plugin Distribution

Found
https://github.com/konnibe/LogbookKo...okkonni_pi.nsi

This seems a bit complicated to me, but perhaps I can do it for one of Sean's plugins.

Some good examples of what we have to do, but once the nsi is finished, what next?

Maybe Hakan can advise?

And I really agree to not "invent the wheel" again and will stop it immediately.
Then - We may instead discus how to use the existing tools.
1. Where are the tools?
2. Why is it not used?
3. In some way it may be up to the plugin author to support a proper distribution to the presumed users? - or anyone else? Are you using it?

Håkan
Hello Hakan,

Please do not misunderstand. I just wanted to remind the developer plugins LogBookKonni and FindIt had created software to install plugins and data.
And I wondered if this work could be reused to install other plugins and data.

Konni had begun to develop three plugins in 2012 and 2013:
LogBookKonni
Find It
Polar.

The first two plugins are really operational. The third was never completed.

Unfortunately, in 2013, he became discouraged and stopped its activity. He explained the reasons for stopping his participation in over OpenCPN forum. But I do not know find this thread.

I found these two files in the Konni github:

https://github.com/konnibe/FindIt_pi.../findit_pi.nsi
https://github.com/konnibe/LogbookKo...okkonni_pi.nsi

Maybe you can benefit.

Re: Plugin Distribution

Hakan,

Please don't get discouraged. Even if there is a little re-inventing going on, it can be much better and is really needed, and after all, it looks like you already succeeded so it can't be too difficult. The installers are greatly needed, as the current system is unworkable.

Re: Plugin Distribution

Hakan,
Here is a nsi file I've changed for celestial navigation.
How do I make sure the data files are installed in celestial_navigation/data/ directory?
How do I compile this to be an exe file?

I have the following in a folder (celestial_nav)
celestial_navigation_pi_test.nsi
celestial_navigation_win32_pi18_v16_ov331328_pi.dl l
celestial_navigation (directory)
celestial_navigation/data/ (directory)
Celestial_Navigation_Information.html
IGRF11.COF
vsop87d.txt

How do I make sure these are installed properly?
How do I add any Internationalization files?

File Type: pdf celestial_navigation_pi_test.nsi.pdf (3.0 KB, 56 views)
