Portability

I understand that as of the last version it is possible to run OpenCPN in portable mode. The way this is done puzzled me a bit (a flag in the command line) and my questions are:
1. Does the OpenCPN installation install information into other places than its directory (windows, directoy, windows registry etc)?
2. During "non prtable" operation does it access files other than these in its own dorectory?
Question relates to Windoes installations

Re: Portability

gbgb...

Not sure I understand the question, but...

OpenCPN uses the "User Data" directory of Windows to store dynamic data. The exact path varies among Windows versions. You can get a hint by clicking the Toolbar->Help icon. The logfile and .ini file locations are shown there. This is the "User Data" directory.

For static or semi-static data, O uses "Program Files" as default, or whatever has been overridden at install time.

I Portable mode, all these directories are in the "current working directory", i.e. wherever O is executed from.
If the charts are also in the current dir, then the entire installation is "portable", meaning there are no hard-coded drive letter dependencies, and all write activities occur in the current dir only.

Does this make it clear?

Thanks
Dave

Re: Portability

Thanks,
This cleared my question - under normal operation the program expects to find data in the user directory, while in portable mode it expectsa to find all info in tit's own dorectory.
It would be nice if the portability option was something that you could define during installation and not during operation, but no big issue.
