portable marine GPS

What is a practical portable GPS with charts ICW, East Coast, Bahamas?
A friend used a handheld compact battery operated Garmin from West Marine which worked great but using batteries, lasting half a day. It came with charts.
I would like a little larger display and also mountable in the cockpit, should be waterproof, and able to connect to 12 V plug.

Thanks

Re: portable marine GPS

Have you used the Samsung xcover3 for GPS navigation on the boat?
What app did you use? How did it work? How long does the battery last?
Thanks
Wolfgang

Re: portable marine GPS

I has used a old Xcover II GT-S7710 and also the initial version of Samsung Xcover with Opencpn android version - works flawless. the last version Xcover III should be even better. Depending on your display brightness setting it may last for up to two days and can be charged with a 12 volt USB charging adaptor. It is a handy device for assisting navigation, but I would never trust it as a sole navigation device due to the lack of external GPS antenna and touch screen operation.
