re: Possible To Change Boat Color ?

Just reverted to 3.0.2 for a while and can see the problems with PNG ownship. If you convert it to XPM, it should work.

re: Possible To Change Boat Color ?

That did it. Converted it to ownship.xpm file.

I'd like to get rid of the white background in the rectangular icon, but so far it's not a show stopper.

Thanks for the help.

I'm living proof that you can teach an old frog new clicks.

now....who's going to help me get this new 3D printer going....

Going back and RTFM for 3.0.2, it clearly states ownship.xpm only.
The drawback of high speed development, is to keep track of which change happened when.

As a bonus, your Icon without white borders. Download and get rid of the .doc extension
ownship.xpm.doc

MAS3...
If you are using OpenCPN 3.0[.2], PNG is not supported for ownship and you have to save the icon as XPM (ownship.xpm) The confusion came from this feature being implemented so early after the release that everybody managed to forget it was actually not backported to the "stable" release.

re: Possible To Change Boat Color ?

Hi nohal, thanks.
After posting, i realised i didn't read the thread to the end, just to the end of page 1.
The solution was given on this page 2 so i removed my post.

I tried to save as .xpm (with the Gimp) but i don't think that was successful, i'll try again later.

MAS3...
You can check the XPM very easily - it's just a text file. How it should look is shown for example at X PixMap - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Had some troubles too to get it right with the Gimp (2.6.11):
selecting xpm in drop-down menu from "save as" would create a xcf and not a xpm file. Typing the extension in directly did work finally.

re: Possible To Change Boat Color ?

Hi all.

The file was created as a .xpm file, thanks nohal.
I can see the shape i created, once opened in a text editor.
Better yet, i could remove imperfections (just drew some lines for this example) this way.

The logs kept complaining about not type 9, this was solved by removing the other files (which i obviously left in the folder) from the folder.
Also, the file will only be accepted as ownship.xpm, so Ownship.xpm will not work.

Also, when creating your own ship, you should use a transparent background.
Else you'll have a (probably white) square box surrounding your custom ownship shape.

So now i can use my own shape if i feel the need to it.

Thanks all.

re: Possible To Change Boat Color ?

So far I have not been able to make my icon with a transparent background. I created it in Corel Painshop as a .jpg and the transparent layer is fine. But when I save it as an .xpm, it takes it all to one layer and fills in the transparent with white. Cagney kindly created a version of my icon with the white part of the rectangle filled in with black, but since the black outline of the yellow icon defined the original shape, blacking it out from the yellow outward essentially lessed the detail I wanted. So since a black outline was no longer working, I just redid it replacing the original black outline with yellow and then using black for everything outside the yellow. Looks okay.

and now I can see it from the cockpit, peering inside to where the laptop resides.

But I would like a transparent background if there's a way to to it. Converting anything to .xpm seems to strip that out of it.

.
Very strange! I created it with a transparent background, and I just downloaded and tested again. Still transparent!
Maybe your Win don't like a Linux alpha-channel?

I did download Greenfish, and after a couple stumbles figured it out. It worked. I made the outer corners transparent. No longer a rectangular icon. I think it looks like a proper catmaran icon. But then, I'm biased.

Thanks for the help.

re: Possible To Change Boat Color ?

@cagney:

I downloaded your version too and saw the transparent background.
That was the reason for me to go and try to create this for my own experiment too, using the Gimp.
So your icon works fine with win XP at least.
