ppa problems

Hi,

I am having problems installing the plugins. I put the ppa into the software manager but it's not being recognized. Below are attached screen shots showing what I'm seeing. I've tried installing it through the terminal also. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: ppa problems

S.V.Away...
There are no plugins in the PPA for Ubuntu "groovy".
Also, the PPA method for installing OpenCPN plugins is now deprecated. The integrated plugin manager will likely be the only method available for installation of plugins under Ubuntu, going forward.

Having said all that, there are no managed plugins specifically available for groovy, yet. As usual, we are working with limited programming resources....

Thanks
Dave

Re: ppa problems

I'am also using the 64 bits Ubuntu Groovy Gorilla as a test setup, and can report that most of the OpenPlotter Extra's can be added to the Groovy .

OpenCPN is allready available in the Ubuntu repository. But I have changed the version to Focal.

OpenCPN works with several plugins. The Oesenc plugin works for the Oesenc Charts.

The SignalK is also installed and works with the route/waypoints output from OpenCPN.

AIS reception with the RTL-DSR dongle is also running form the calibration app of OpenPlotter.

Not all OpenCpn plugins are available.

See image below.

Also tried the Hirsute Hippo. But here not yet OpenPlotter add-ons. But OpenCPN is running and also with the SignalK server.. The Hirtute is still work in progress but is avaiable as an RPI image.

Thanks for the info. I’m really wanting the radar-pi and watcdog plug-in. Hopefully it will be available soon. Thanks again.

OpenCPN focus on the long term releases of Ubuntu, the latest being Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS Focal Fossa. The releases in between (like Groovy) are not supported as such, but may work with plugins for the latest release, depending on exactly what has changed.

Your best bet is to try to use the Focal plugins. As"verkerkbr" had a few of them working there is a good chance that radar-pi and watchdog plugin
will work as well. Otherwise you have to compile them yourself if you persist with "Groovy".

Re: ppa problems

I'am using the latest Ubuntu Hirtute on my Raspberry Pi. This is a 64 bits OS.

OpenCPN has not yet a release for the Hirtute nor the Groovy version.

You have to change the release setting in the server to Focal. then it works with version 5.2.4.

I also added the SignalK data server and the instrument panel MXTommy Kip.

To use the packet manager with the server settings I use the synaptic application.

Yes!
If you persist with Groovy......Wait until Debian updates to OpenCPN 5.2.4!!

If you read above.... there is no OpenCPN release for Groovy. As you persisted to install OpenCPN the only alternative was in the end to install the "official Ubuntu OpenCPN" which is the Debian version, currently 5.0. This is a slight change compared with how things behaved a year or so, ago. The reason is that OpenCPN has been officially adopted by Debian and hence by Ubuntu.

If you really want 5.2.4 follow the advice from "verkerkbr" above.

Hi Thomas,
thank you for the time you spend on this forum.

I did not 'persist' I just followed instruction from the O how to install page:
Code:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:opencpn/opencpn
That created the PPA for me.

It took me some time to understand what bot you and "verkerkbr" were trying to tell me, but I eventually found how to do it and, after a software update, I now have V5.2.4 running ok.

Now, for those less tech savvy, this is how I did it:
  1. Launch 'Software Centre' -> Settings -> Software Sources (you might be asked for your sudo password.
  2. Select 'Other Software' tab
  3. select and edit the 2 opencpn ppa by changing the 'Distribution' to 'focal'

Name:	OCPN-focal PPA.jpeg
Views:	59
Size:	72.6 KB
ID:	237381
Leave everything else as it is.

Run an update and check if O is now V5.2.4. It worked for me.
