Problem with downloading V5

Hi, I'm new to this forum. I may be in the wrong location.

I am trying to upgrade from OpenCPN v4.8.4 to v5. I've entirely disabled my security settings and still the program crashes within 18 seconds of launching it. I'm at a loss as to how to get this to work.

I don't want to lose my setting as it took a lot of effort to integrate Matsutec AIS.

I have a video showing the crash.
I have a log file of the installation.

I'm running Windows 10 64 bit on Acer Aspire E15

Are all the preferences and settings in the config file?

My version five is showing the config file as:
C:\ProgramData\opencpn\opencpn.ini

Could one solution be to uninstall opencpn (>control panel >programs >uninstall) and then later move over the file with the preferences and settings?

yes, all the settings are in the opencpn.ini file.
You can rename it and OpenCPN will start from scratch with a "virgin" setting.



If you used some plug-in and that did write into some folder of its own, then the automatic uninstall can be incomplete and does need manual deletion of that folder. But his shall not prevent OpenCPN from start.


If OpenCPN crashes at start, then try to set OpenGL=Off in the ini file.
The ini file shall always be edited with OpenCPN closed - if not the program will save the actual, running setting when closing, making any external edit useless.

Be sure to edit opencpn.ini with notepad not wordpad.

It’s a good idea to make backup copies of the file opencpn.ini and *.xml files in the programdata folder.

When opencpn starts it writes to a file opencpn.log. It might help to see what is in that file. Just the lines from the time of program start to the crash might tell something useful.

I think the log shows clearly when things went well to bad and the various error messages.

As the program crashes before I can accomplish anything, where can I find my tracks to insert them later?

Yes, this looks like a problem with the graphics.


- Please try to run with OpenGL switched off
In the opencpn.ini file you will see
OpenGL=1
change that to
OpenGL=0

Save and try again. As Transmitterdan said: Use some decent editor like Notepad++ to edit the file.



- Investigate if there is a more recent driver or firmware for your (built-in) graphic system

I don't know what happens here.
When with the same computer OpenCPN 4.8.4 works well then OpenCPN 5.0 should work as well.
It is the same hardware, same drivers, nothing changed but only the OpenCPN version.
So it is not only OpenGL but also the NMEA connections failed with OCPN 5.0 as seen in the attached log. Obviously something is wrong with the way the update to OCPN 5.0 have been installed.

Hi, One key reason to upgrading to OpenCPN v5 is to use MBtiles. MBtiles requires OpenGL to be enabled so that’s where the test drive has stopped. I went back into the config file and switched OpenGL back on and I can see the MBtiles (these look GREAT!). But if I zoom too much or move the chart too far, OpenCPN crashes.

Have you got a fix for this?

As I had changed the config file per your advice, I was very interested in learning more about OpenGL. I was thankful and enlightened to read that excellent information in the manual.

Finally, the initial crash reports showed failures of the GPS. This was expected as the GPS was intentionally not connected during that test. Subsequently, with OpenGL=0, AIS and GPS functions seemed to work fine (after I reset the GPS baud rate setting as that setting didn’t carry forward, a minor point.) In fact, AIS and GPS seem to function fine with OpenGL=1 but OpenCPN crashes before I can really test.

I love OpenCPN. I hope you’ll have a solution for me.

I agree with Hubert, try the available “unstable” MSVC version. It may work for you. Let us know if it does or not.

It’s possible you have very old video drivers installed. If Windows says you have the latest drivers it is not always right about that.

I've just completed this process with no change in results.
The system crashes the same as it did before...

(I updated today from 2017-09-25 ; driver version 22 21/13/8573)
