Is it possible to use one of the various RADAR overlay tools with an example file to practice using the RADAR interface away from the boat?

Yes but not very straight forward if you want a "real" playback.
One method can be:

1. Record a boat trip with plugin VDR to get all NMEA messages. (Incl. Heading if not a Navico 4G and a N2K Compass)
2. For the same trip capture your radar traffic by for example Wireshark (Windows).
Replay later the VDR and the Wireshark capture and try to synchronize it.

To play a Wireshark capture I use Tcpreplay. Tcpreplay is for Linux only but I use to send by IP direct to a Windows where OCPN, VDR_pi and a radar_pi is running.

Another way to do this is to make sure that a NMEA0183 stream and radar stream are both available on Ethernet, then use tcpdump to store this and tcpreplay to replay it.


This alleviates the synchronisation issue, but make sure the 0183 stream is UDP otherwise OpenCPN won't be able to listen to it when the stream is replayed.
