Receiving AIS positions from home

Hi all, good day.

I've started using OpenCPN a few weeks ago. I already have my charts, and I had no issues with any of the features tested, looks great!

I was wondering if there is any way to receive vessel's AIS positions when being at home, not on board. Is there anyway OpenCPN can feed itself from any of the onshore antenas and display real time traffic? (Similar to what would be MarineTraffic, Vessel Finder, or so...)

Looking forward to your assistance.

Many thanks!

You should study yourself what AIS is and what it is not.

Yes you can funnel AIS data from some shore device to your home or other receivers or OpenCPN instances.
Take your time and read the relevant parts of the manual regarding communication settings.

If you get to a point you don't get resolved, just come back.

BCN, Thanks for the input. Will take a look to The Connections setup.

CarCode, I am aware of what an AIS is. I was just asking if i.e. as in SEAiq , you can look at AIS traffic from home.

What SEAiq does is actually transmit what AISHub.com antenas on shore receive.

You can do exactly the same in OpenCPN by pointing it to your AISHub.com data feed.

Yes, I do exactly what you are asking about. I have access to the feed from three shore based AIS stations in my local area and view them from home. First you need to organise a data feed, the rest is in the manual and if that doesn’t work people here are very helpful.

Thanks! Good to know someone inside the forum is doing same I pretend to do.
However, I think its far away of my possibilities to set it up, as there are many things I don't seem to understand.

Besides, and being honest, I don't think it will make much sense unless there is a data feed bigger than AISHub. (Its very poor for South America, where I am based).

All the best,

Re: Receiving AIS positions from home

I assume you want to see at home the AIS targets that is seen from the AIS onboard your vessel ? Correct ? If you have any type of internet available from your boat, it is straight forward to use, for example a raspberry PI loaded with openplotter thar will make it possible to see the AIS signals from your boat at home.

If that is what you are looking for - reply to this post and I will try to guide you.
