The documentation on BBN is excellent IMHO. The only thing I couldn't find was what's that difference.

I wish it were like that but I am afraid it is not. Do not worry, I do not have time to waste on these things, besides, you do not have a good project until you have good haters so it is all good.

For differences between LITE and FULL versions you can take a look at this discussion thread

Thank you! Nice, the Lite version seems to make a lot of sense for those without much equipment to connect, and able to safely add on plugins after base installation.

Actually BBN Lite and Full allow support of about same equipment (except radio which is in Full).
The difference is in number of applications included.
Lite has a smaller set.

Re: Recommended Cockpit Platform

RE: BBN As of this morning Cloudsmith still reports "This page is not working" or there abouts.

So I went back to the OpenPlotter install.

I installed my new 64Gb SD card in my PC laptop.
I went to
https://cloud.openmarine.net/s/3gjyK...-64bit-img.zip.
This is the full touchscreen image
I downloaded this to my PC hard drive and unzipped it
I opened PI Imager and selected the above .img file as my OS.
Pi Imager installs and verifies.
I also get a Kapersky note about the SD drive and a PC note saying the card must be formatted to be used. I ignore both of these.
Pi Image gives me the note to remove the SD card.
I then install the SD card into the Pi and turn it on.
I let it set a few hours as I had some chores but it never boots up.
Note the Pi DOES boot with the factory provided SD card.

What am I doing wrong?

Cloudsmith resets quotas for BBN on first of each month at 9:15 UTC. So if you try to download it in 3 hours after this message it should work. Otherwise I gave you two alternative options to download it (available anytime).

Re: Recommended Cockpit Platform

OK, I will try again later this evening or tomorrow.

I an hesitant about trying the more complicated methods, I am having enough trouble with the simple stuff.

Thanks for hanging in with me.

Re: Recommended Cockpit Platform

BBN progress update.

So I got the img file down off of Cloudsmith.
I copied it to a folder on my PC.
I opened and ran Pi Imager.
I selected the downloaded img file and executed it in Pi Image
The filed processed and rhen Verified.
As with OpenPlotter I got the Kapersky note about the SD being OK which I ignored.
And I got a note about needing to format the disk to work, which I ignored.
Pi Image said to remove the SD card
I installed it in the Pi5 and turned it on.
That was well over and hour ago and still no sign of life.

In short identical to the OpenPlotter img.

Clearly I am doing something wrong. But what?

Assuming you have windows 10 and you are current on your updates, get Kapersky off your computer. The built in Windows defender is as good as any aftermarket protection.
See how it works after that is done.

Re: Recommended Cockpit Platform

Finally, for tonight,

I used a fresh SD card and ran a Pi5 OS image with no luck.

Then I too the same SD card and formatted it as FAT32 and then used Pi Imager to install PiOS. And still no luck.

Am I correct to assume that Pi Imager does NOT require the SD cards to be pre-formatted?

I hear the comment about Kapersky. On the to do list.

Re: Recommended Cockpit Platform

@hpeer, of you pop the SD card back into your windows computer after imaging either OpenPlotter or BBN into it, what do you see in Windows File Explorer?

You should see at least once drive with boot information (correct me guys if this is not right).

It seems to me like the card isn't getting written.

You do not need to format the card, but it will not hurt do do so. The imager will completely overwrite the card, including all formatting and partition information. When done, there will be multiple partitions on the card, and not all of them will even be visible to windows. You could open disk management (Windows button->"computer management"->then Disk Management from the navigation tree) and see the SD card layout and partition information.

I am looking at my OpenPlotter card now, and Windows only mounts one drive letter, named bootfs, that contains the files required to boot linux, but does not contain the OS or OpenPlotter itself. Those are on a partition that Windows does not recognize.

It is not uncommon for anti malware software to block writing to a disks boot sector or a boot partition. So highly likely, it is Kapersky that is the issue. If uninstalling it is too much of a hastle, there must be a way to disable it temporarily. I've not used Kapersky in many many years, but there should be an option to disable it for 20 minutes or something.

Re: Recommended Cockpit Platform

It’s Kaspersky. It will report when it blocks something from writing at boot sectors.

I highly recommend to keep using it. The reason people argue against it is because it’s Russian and they paint a picture that the Russian government can access your data. Of course like always they accuse the other side of exactly what they are doing themselves as exposed repeatedly. Last week they found another backdoor in Cisco routers.

Experts never found any backdoors in Kaspersky.

Kaspersky doesn’t allow the US 3-letter organizations to install backdoors or whitelists into it for spying on the users of the computer. All US based products are forced to allow it.

That said, temporarily disabling it to write a SD card is fine. Whether the Pi image has a backdoor or not may not interest you given that almost every electronics product you buy has it. It’s why Huawei phones were popular and now not allowed in the US anymore.

To eliminate theory about wrongly written SD card you can try network install of raspberry pi OS.
