Recording Radar Spokes

Hi all;
I've used openCPN for a while now, and love the flexibility of what I can do.

On question that I can't seem to answer is how to record radar signals from a Navico radar scanner.

Obviously I can track AIS targets, position and heading using VDR, which works well, thanks to all the developers on that!

I've thought I could potentially use wireshark to just packet sniff the spokes as they get multicast from the scanner, has anyone tried this?

Are there any more logical ways to capture these spokes?

Thoughts?

Thanks
alex

Alex,

are you aware of the Navico Radar-plug-in?

Re: Recording Radar Spokes

BCN;
Yes, my apologies for any lack of clarity.
Using the radar plug-in and using the end computer to send the command structure to the radar to turn it on and adjust it, I then want to record the spokes coming back to file (preferably as well as show it on the display).
It would be ideal to record the radar command packets too (range, clutter reduction etc...)

Does that make more sense?

Thanks!

Re: Recording Radar Spokes

alex...

You will need to hack and recompile the Radar plugin. Write the captured/cooked radar spokes to a file. File would get huge pretty quick, unless you did some compression on-the-fly. ZIP compression would work well, as the spokes are mostly blank, anyway.

Why do you want this data, anyway? Just curious...

Re: Recording Radar Spokes

That's sort of what I feared. Do you know if there are any debug flags that can be switched to enable logging of it?

Yes, agreed it takes up gallons of space. I can deal with that.

I'm looking to build a data-set of radar, AIS, IMU and vector charting data to attempt some deep learning on the radar systems. It's pretty well established science but I haven't seen it used at a small scale before.

Thoughts?

Thanks
