Request for screenshots

Request for screenshots:

We are still working to harmonize the various display element physical sizes onscreen across all the different device resolutions. The goal is to make the display "nice" and usable with the default out-of-box scaling factors as set by settings->UI->ChartObject scale factor (COSF = 0)

Currently, on some platforms, the AIS targets and the ATON sizes are wildly divergent. This is what we attempt to harmonize, if possible.

This primarily concerns Windows users, or at least we can start there.

Using the latest Beta, I would like to see screenshots from a variety of platforms, including AIS targets if possible. Perhaps a snapshot of VDR recording would be best, since we can compare the same image for all. Try this one:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ztfechrelo...fjord.txt?dl=0
(Thanks, Hakan)

I would like to see:
a) Out of Box presentation, COSF=0
b) What you consider "nice", or "nice enough" COSF=??

I need device information, especially screen resolution and physical screen size, or device name/type.
And, of course, comments.

In this series, we try to compare the AIS target size, ownship size, and typical ATON size. Here is an example from a standard desktop. I consider this "nice", and fully usable. COSF=0, in this case for my hardware. Note that the AIS targets are just about the same size as ownship and floating ATONs.

Thanks for your help
Dave

Re: Request for screenshots

From my (in)famous Dell XPS13 with the HiRes screen.

COSF = 0 is ok.

Personally I would go for -1, but I know that the average will consider this too small.

Re: Request for screenshots

bcn...

For your display, some would say that the ATON renderings(buoys, especially) are too small. I have had the idea generally that ATONs and AIS targets and ownship should be roughly the same size. But not so on your device.

Speaking abstractly, maybe it is too much to try to scale "everything" with one slider. For instance, Rick would like soundings to be bigger, without growing ATON or AIS. Bruce Chen wants ATONs bigger, AIS smaller, etc....

For my app design preference, I would like to have one slider just do the "right" thing. Too many controls can lead to "user paralysis"...

What say you?

Re: Request for screenshots

Here a stock of screen copy.

I change the value of the two slider that are in "Options/User interface"

Slider n° 1 : User interface scale factor
Slider n° 2 : Chart object scale factor.

The value used for each screen copy is inside the name of each screen copy.

Re: Request for screenshots , second

3 other screen copy with AIS target.

Lenovo W 10, 64 bits, Intel core i5-5200U, CPU@ 2.20 Gh, RAM 4.0 Gb, Graphic card : Intel HD Graphics 5500

OpenGL ON

Here I change only, COSF.

For the buoy, I like COSF = 5 but, in this case, the Boat is enormous. Not good. And the AIS target are also too big (but not enormous)

So, I use COSF = 1 or 2 actually. But the buoy are too little ....

So download this stock here : DL.FREE.FR

Re: Request for screenshots

Dave...

let us wait for more examples.
I see your point - and agree with your idea having the UI as simple as possible.

There are two object types:
Chart objects and AIS plus OwnShip.
Relative size of the chart objects is defined by S-52. Leaves us with the relative size of the "vessels".
For the latter we have the "attenuated version" for less important targets as an additional ingredient.
For OwnShip we have tweaks at its direct settings.

Would give two sliders at most: Chart objects and Vessels

Disclaimer: For me the object size of the buoys etc. is ok, but I know that 85% of the rest will say that this by far too small.

Hubert, you have the art of making a remarkable synthesis!

Dave, if you split the action of the current COSF in two, putting another slider for the boat, it may be appreciated by many users.
But should this cursor be in the "Options / UI" page or in the "Options / Boat / own ship" page? Personally, I will put it in the second page.

Re: Request for screenshots

Dave..
On Win10-64 14" screen at 1366x768.
The object size slider = 0 suits me fine for all objects. Even the not set blue flag is visible as of shot 1, upper left corner. My own VDR also as a shot for comparison.
Both shots have the original boat symbol although I normally use the vector bitmap to get a relevant GPS location on the boat symbol.

Re: Request for screenshots

Win10, SurfacePro3, using most current OpenCPN Alpha, 2160 x 1440 resolution, 11.5" diagonal. 2mb graphics memory, Dedicated Video Memory 128mb, Shared system memory 2mb, Intel HD Graphics 4400, default boat setting used. Chart Object Scale Factor =0 is shown. The ATON, Boat and AIS is fine at COSF=0. You know my thoughts about vector cartography and depth soundings. Thanks for asking!

Re: Request for screenshots

Folks...

Thanks for the screenshots. Learned some stuff:

1. The internal OCPN logic seems to be doing the right thing at COSF=0. We see that ownship, AIS targets, and ATONs are all roughly the same size, independent of platform. That's good.

2. Found two bugs:

a) In GL mode, using default ownship symbol, the ownship scaling was applied in a compound way, leading to extra large ownship icon rendering at COSF > 0.

b) In non-GL mode, AIS target rendering was not honoring COSF > 0.

I fixed those two items in github.

Screen shot attached, corrected code, GL mode. Note now ownship and AIS roughly the same size at COSF > 0

Now I will investigate the idea of a "Ship Size" slider control. Will report results.

Thanks
Dave

Re: Request for screenshots

Hello...

I have implemented a separate options slider control for Ship and AIS target rendering. In github now. More flexibility is good.

Will go to next Beta tonight, I think.

Thanks for the feedback

Re: Request for screenshots

Very nice. Thank you Dave. I can see depths! and with the Swedish Palette it will be even better.

Three Scale Factors - User Interface, Chart Objects, Ship.
Raster & Vector Chart Zoom Factors
Overall view.

This is set to Chart Objects Scale Factor = 5
Win10 SurfacePro3 with a small screen 11.5" diagonal and high resolution 2133x1440 res which makes vector soundings very small when shown with a 0 scale factor. Setting it to #5 makes it much closer to the Raster Cartography Standard and the Ship icon and Aton's etc stay at a good size!

All eyesight impaired, ...we used to call them "handicapped" people.. will thank you Dave, for conforming to "Universal Design Standards" which would trump ECDIS, I expect.

This needs to be added to the wiki.
