Rockfish Conservation areas

Hello all, I am new here but looking for some info on .gpx files. I live in British Columbia Canada and one of our fishing challenges now are Rockfish Conservation areas.

Area 12 to 20, 28 and 29 | Rockfish Conservation Areas | Pacific Region | Fisheries and Oceans Canada

These are area's where you are not allowed to use a hook for fishing. If you visit the link above and go to area 12 you can see the challenge of knowing where you are allowed to go and where not.

So, I have am attempting to solve this dilemma using technology. I have been making basically circle routes in Open CPN that encompass each area. I can then take the .gpx file and upload to my Lowarance HDS7. Works alright, but I am trying to get these route/boundary lines show up in colour on my HDS7. There's the challenge. What I read about .gpx is that the file format will not convey colour?? Is this true? Is there another way? I have tried converting .kml files from Google earth to .usr files that my HDS7 uses with GPS Babel. Unfortunately it strips info as well.

Any Idea's? Ideally if I could use Open CPN to make the .gpx and take it to my HDS7 that would save a bunch of steps.

Thanks in advance for any idea's

Cheers

Re: Rockfish Conservation areas

opencpn draw plugin might work for you. I made this in a few minutes as an example.
The gps locations could be done very accurately and the colour and styles can be changed.
Looks like it can be exported as a GPX.

Re: Rockfish Conservation areas

Thanks for the advice. I downloaded and tried it out. I can create the areas, but they wouldn't export to google earth. I am going to take the file out to my HDS7 now and give it a try.

Re: Rockfish Conservation areas

Hi again, just tried to import one of those .gpx files into the HDS7. It would not import the file. I will try some other stuff with it. Thanks for the suggestion.

Cheers

Re: Rockfish Conservation areas

Hi, got this reply from Lowrance. Guess this ends this deal.

Hi,

Unfortunately that is how HDS displays routes, they are black. There's no control on their color.
Tracks can be configured to many different colors but routes are displayed in black.

Rgds,

Re: Rockfish Conservation areas

Can you import it as a track perhaps?

You might be able to. But I am not sure how you would draw a track to import? Thanks for the suggestion it gives me something else to try.

Re: Rockfish Conservation areas

,
Make a track in opencpn and export to Gpx. Then look at it with a text editor. See what form it takes ans how the points are different from waypoints.
Then for a small portion try converting wp to track and see if it will work in both O and your plotter.
