RPi upgrade question

I am currently running OpenCpn 5.2.4 on an Rpi 4, Buster ver 10. I would like to upgrade to the latest release of OpenCpn, but get the following when I run a sudo apt update command...

Err:4 https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/opencpn/opencpn/ubuntu bionic Release
404 Not Found [IP: 185.125.190.52 443]

E: The repository 'https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/opencpn/opencpn/ubuntu bionic Release does not have a Release file.

I suspect an error in the ppa in my sources list, which is...
deb https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/opencpn/opencpn/ubuntu buster main

Any feedback is appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: RPi upgrade question

I just upgraded my RPi 4's to OpenCPN 5.6.2 a couple weeks ago by using Openplotter.

Bootup RPi

Click on Openplotter in the menu and select OpenCPN Installer

Then click on OpenCPN Main top row.

You can probably figure it out from there

Re: RPi upgrade question

I never used OpenPlotter on my Pi, so it's not on my system. The website seems to only offer image files, which would require burning a new SD card and starting from scratch.

However, after reading through their site, and references the OpenCpn site, I did find that the PPA source on my pi had an error in it. That's been corrected, and it now updates.

So, even though the OpenPlotter suggestion doesn't work with my PI, your suggestion forced me to read through some info that led to a fix!
Thanks.

Great!

Btw you should be able to format and reload your SD Card with Openplotter if it's still available.

I did that several times when I was trying to load the image back in the day.

I have several SD Cards though and 2 RPi 4's

New 32 GB SD cards are like $7.00 - $8.00 so you could get another one and experiment with OpenPlotter if you want

Re: RPi upgrade question

Yes, I've got several sd cards, and made a backup before heading down the upgrade path. I may give OpenPlotter a shot.

What I don't have is enough PI 4's, and availability/price has been a problem. I hope that changes in the near future.

I lucked out and got two Canakit RPi 4's (4 GB Ram) when they were $99.00 each

Re: RPi upgrade question

I did the same. Now all suppliers are generally "sold out". I've even been looking at some sbc cards that will run ubuntu, but have held out hoping the PI situation would improve.

On a different note, are you using AIS on OpenCpn? I've been shopping for a transponder that would integrate via USB, but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

Yes, I have AIS and GPS coming in from my SH GX2200 VHF via a USB adapter and connected to RPi and OpenCpn

See video below. That was running with RPi.

I now have my Laptop onboard and RPi's here at home. They will be backup for when I cruise long distance, The 19"HDTV is my monitor for the RPI. Laptop had HD screen 17"

Photo is laptop with Victron display from my solar ,and batteries.

Video is of RPi with OpenCPN and AIS displayed on 19" HDTV

Link to adapter below. Also got an extender USB Cable.

Re: RPi upgrade question

Outstanding, and thank you for sharing that! I've looked at that transceiver, and it's got great specs. We spend a bit of time coastal cruising offshore and I want to broadcast AIS positions as well. I think the Garmin AIS 800 transponder will allow that, and I've considered it but need to verify.

On our boat, my PI is connected to a small router that creates what I call a Boat Area Network. OpenCpn is displayed on a 23" flatscreen tv, and the router allows tablets, cell phones, etc., to connect via wifi to allow access. The router memorizes WiFi services (IE: marinas), and will connect to those automatically when we come ashore. This allows us to stream video, update files, etc. It will also route data through a cell phone hotspot, so pretty flexible.

AIS will be my next integration.

Sounds like a nice setup.

I plan to get an AIS transceiver also within the next two years, but right now it's all about replacing my chainplates, rigging, and sails.
